Hooley: What would your speech to CBJ season ticket holders would be? Why would they renew considering lack of Richards/big moves/etc.
Howson: We made an offer with many options. They chose another option. We got frozen out of that. We knew we were moving Fedorov no matter what. We tried to keep Foote on a 2 year deal. He didn't want to stay for the rest of the year with no contract. He wanted to be traded.
Spiels: Approaching offseason how agressive will you be? How hard is it to attract players to Columbus with a spending cap?
Howson: owners are flexible. If we approach ownership with something that makes sense, it will happen. We now have lots of room under the cap, lots of young assets. We will be very aggressive. Our needs are center ice and Defense. We think Brassard will be there one day, but not yet. We will fill it another way.
QBHerbie: Fans have been told to "wait till next year" every year. Give fans something to look forward to, something to hold on to.
Howson: We are flexible, have good prospects in Voracek, Mason, Brassard. Fans have been hearing it a long time, I understand. We are still right there in playoff race. If we make it through next 4 games we are really in the thick of it. Players are disappointed in losing Feds and Foote, but we are moving forward. We have leaders in the room. We have faith in our group.
QB: If this team rallies and is in the thick of the 8th spot, is there anyway to make a move?
Howson: (Caughing/laughing at moronic question) The roster is set. Other than AHL call ups we can't do anything.
Tooley: Was the lack of a goalie in the Richards deal the reason for not landing Richards?
Howson: Hard to say if that's the only reason. Pascal was obviously not going to be in the deal. We have Mason, but they have other young goalies. They wanted someone who can play now and we didn't have it.
Howson: Not allowed to answer. We were turning over every stone in search for center. Timing wasn't right. San Jose was in buyer mode, not seller mode. Not shocked San Jose wasn't going to do it. Richards wasn't only center we went after.
Tooley: Hitch signed thru next year. Are you on same page?
Howson: Laughing a bit. Yes we are the same page. I talk with Hitch every day. My job is to manage on long term basis, his is to get points. we have great relationship. We support each other every day.
Herby: Zherdev's growth?
Howson: Yeah. He's matured. I said failure is a great motivator. Z had bad year and did some soul searching. We asked for him to report in shape and be a good team mate. That's what happened. He's a better teammate. He's learning English. We trust him more. It's working out.
Tooley: CBJ only team not to make playoffs. Losers have to pay more for free agents. Is it harder to get free agents in Columbus?
Howson: Everyone overpays for free agents. We have attractive players to play with. Richards said Columbus was a preferred option. We're going to have to win on our own to convince players to come here, and I think we're on our way.
Why are they so sure that Hitch and Howson are not on the same page.. the whole we will find out tommorow on the coach's show if thats really true comment is nuts not everyone has drama people get over it you took a quote outa context lisen a lil closer next time boys
LETS GO JACKETS !!!!
LETS GO STARS !!!
Howson talking to the Sharks about Marleau wouldn’t be tampering.
Howson talking to Marleau or Marleau’s agent would be.
I think it is just common practice for GMs to not share the transaction discussions they’ve had, particularly if it is a discussion that might resume at a later date. That was one of the things I liked about MacLean -- he’d let stuff slip.
I like Scott Howson cause he is hockey smart and lawyer saavy. He doesn't give up near as much info as MacLean used to, but Maclean was thought to be an arse in the hockey world from jump, and an arse in Cbus by the time he left the bench and promoted a guy that never coached.
Now we have hockey reporters that are part time.. and not good at that. Why didn't they do it right and have George/ Bill/ Rimmer and JimDAY all on that interview. It really could have been informative.
Man what a fart of a day.. I've got gas, and we still don't have a #1 centremen.
