Nice GDT!

This is an interesting matchup.

Both of these teams have had their roster shaken up a bit since last season.

Buffalo is still a dangerous team and our defense will need to be ready for Vanek and company. Buffalo is going to be fired up, ready to move on after losing Campbell, and Bernier (if he plays, not sure on the status), well we all know that he can do some damage against us.

I would expect Hlavac to play, I wonder what the status of Bochenski is.

Trotz on where to play Hlavac:
Quote:
Trotz said he was thinking about using Hlavac on a line with David Legwand and Martin Erat, or on a line with Jerred Smithson and Darcy Hordichuk.

"I could also make an all-Czech line if I wanted to,'' Trotz said. "We'll probably stay fairly status quo (today) and then get more familiar with his game.''

Hlavac is expected to meet the team this morning in Buffalo, however Bochenski will not meet the team until after the game. It'll definitely be interesting to watch practice Thursday morning to see the line combinations going through drills and whether or not they change them up as practice progresses.

As for the lineup, Trotz is definitely in a pickle trying to fit these guys in and see where they best fit without disrupting the existing chemistry. He presents three options:

Hlavac - Legwand - Erat

This would be my first choice for Hlavac. Bonk simply hasn't been producing here either on the scoreboard or in terms of creating scoring chances for his linemates. I honestly thought he had been nursing a shoulder or arm injury since his return to the lineup about a month ago, but yesterday was told that he as healthy as you can be at this point in the season. Therefore, this combination would serve two purposes. First, it would give the second line a two-way player who is used to playing in a more offensive role and can skate well enough to keep up with his linemates, this might be what they need...only time will tell. The second purpose of it would be to kick Bonk in the butt and hopefully put him back in a defensive minded two-way role that better suits his game.

Hordichuk - Smithson - Hlavac

Yes, Hlavac does play on both wings which will create more possibilities for where to fit him in and also adds to his value. This lineup would be the most simple way of introducing him into the lineup tonight with minimal practice time and would allow the coaching staff to make adjustments to the lineup as necessary throughout the game. Obviously, this is not going to be the most ideal situation though as Hlavac is not a 4th liner and will not be able to showcase his talents for the coaching staff or anyone else here. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the line he started on tonight, but I would be surprised if he stayed there for very long.

Erat - Bonk - Hlavac
Nichol - Legwand - Tootoo

The "All Czech Line" scenario. One I joked about, but seriously considered immediately after the trade. This would go along the theory that European players tend to play better with players from their home country due to the emphasis on skills so prevalent in the European game. Furthermore, anyone who remembers Hlavac from his first stint in the NHL probably remembers him from his time in New York with the Rangers on the top line with Nedved and Jagr. This combination lead to a career year for Hlavac and would be hoped to replicate similiar success here in Nashville.

The main problem with this line combination though is that it would drastically disrupt two lines with very minimal practice time to allow the lines to gel. The big upside would be that this very well could work and create two more scoring lines to provide secondary scoring. Nichol would obviously have to take faceoffs for Legwand at times, but that is status quo. Scott has played at wing at times throughout the past two seasons and has not experienced any drop off in his play. Legwand excels at center, however due to his long skating stride he looks totally out of place on the wing where shorter quick strides are needed to change direction to defend in open ice. Basically, the bottom line is that this combination creates two lines with speed and plays ideally to the strengths of all players involved. I think we might eventually see this combination, but simply don't think it'll come tonight.

Well Hlavac didn't arrive in time for the morning skate, therefore he will start on the fourth line tonight with Hordichuk and Smithson and Trotz said he would "experiment" throughout the game and basically allow for Hlavac to meet his teammates tonight.

Mason to start the game in net tonight, which is simply a continuation of the goaltending rotation we've seen for quite a while now.

Should be a good game...hopefully. Buffalo moved out defenseman Brian Campbell yesterday to San Jose for Bernier and a 1st, so someone is going to get the opportunity to step up into a bigger role tonight on the Buffalo blueline. Need to really bring it though as Buffalo is coming off of a shootout loss Monday and with their crowd, we need to get out to an early lead to try to take them out of the game.

First game back for JP to Buffalo tonight too. He is afraid he'll get booed like his former teammates (read Briere and Drury) did, but he left under different circumstances after Buffalo rejected his arbitration win and allowed him to become a free agent.

Is it 6 PM yet??? All this snow today has gotten me in the mood for some hockey!!!

I dont think he will be booed, a little reading of the Buffalo GDT earlier suggests that he is still well liked over there and for good reason. He didnt exactly "Kariya" the organization.

anyone think that with ellis having two straight less than stellar starts that a strong performance by mason tonight gets him the nod again saturday vs Dallas?

do you say that thinking its a one time thing since ellis didnt do so well against dallas last time, or do you think the rotation is over and trotz is gonna give mase a few games in a row to try to let him solidify the #1 spot?

Probably Mason if he performs tonight.

Ellis has 1 win and 1 [horrible] loss to Dallas, Mason has 1 win, so I think he will be given his 2nd chance.

Damn, I was hoping we would miss him. Hopefully he doesn't make a positive impact for his new team tonight...

"Kariya" the organization?

HA!

Some of you Preds fans are funny.

You guys didn't even offer him a contract, but it's Kariya's fault?

Wow, get over it.

I'm not sure, probably because of Ellis's play. I do think that we will eventually try to get Mason in a groove to become the official starter...

Nichol stopped by Miller on the PK as Nichol basically shoots it right into him.

Uh oh, watch out Western conference... Hlavac is here!

Hlavac with an easy tap in after a shot from the blue line bloodies up Miller.

Miller taken out (my guess would be that its temporary).

Arnott picks up trash and puts the Predators within 1.

Edit: Buffalo quickly answers..

And the late February / Early March yearly downward spiral continues again. Maybe we still have time to tank and get a top 10 pick like in 2003. Problem is Poile will waste them on more Defensmen so we'll be loaded at that position even more and have to turn them into forwards to get ice time. 4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds= 4 more defensive prospects
