Congrats to Sid, 11 years of excellence to get there. Could've happened earlier if not for injuries, but he's still going strong it seems.

I think thats a misprint. Didn't Gretzky reach 1,000 points at the age of 12 or something? lol

Crosby still in the top five for PPG all time. That will drop if his career continues into his mid 30's or so but I would not expect him to drop too far down the list. He already is on his 12th season.

Four of the top twenty players are still active and bolded. Given that his entire career was in one of the lowest scoring eras in NHL history, that PPG is all the more striking.

1 Wayne Gretzky 1.921
2 Mario Lemieux 1.883
3 Mike Bossy 1.497
4 Bobby Orr 1.393
5 Sidney Crosby 1.321
6 Marcel Dionne 1.314
7 Peter Stastny 1.268
8 Peter Forsberg 1.250
9 Kent Nilsson 1.241
10 Phil Esposito 1.240
11 Guy Lafleur 1.202
12 Joe Sakic 1.191
13 Dale Hawerchuk 1.186
14 Evgeni Malkin 1.179
15 Pat Lafontaine 1.171
16 Steve Yzerman 1.159
17 Eric Lindros 1.138
18 Alexander Ovechkin 1.136
19 Bernie Federko 1.130
20 Jaromír Jágr 1.128

Not taking away anything from two of the best players the game has ever seen in saying this, but Gretzky's first ten years, 1980 to 1990, the league averaged 3.74 goals per game. Mario's first ten years was 1983-1993, the league averaged 3.99 goals per game. That was the highest scoring decade in NHL history.

Crosby's first ten years, 2005 to 2015, the league averaged 2.65 goals per game. One of the lowest scoring decades in league history.

http://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/stats.html

Unless the league gets serious about increasing scoring again, you will not ever see anyone no matter how talented come close to those two.

But also it is what makes comparing players from different eras so difficult. Almost a goal and a half per game per team difference in league wide scoring is pretty huge.

Hawerchuk is weird. By the time he turned 31, he had already played over 1,000 NHL games, but then his body broke down and he was finished by age 34 after 1,188 games. As for Crosby, I see him reaching 1,000 assists and being the best playmaker of this generation. (Crosby is currently 369-633--1,002 in terms of goals, assists, and points.) A player who should be particularly thankful is Chris Kunitz.

Here's a list put out by the Pens of the guys in on Sid's 1000 pts.
Palffy was interesting cuz he only played 42 games with Sid his rookie year and contributed on 23 of Sid's points.
They had great chemistry.

Crosby's achievement is very impressive, but in fairness for Jagr, he started his career on bottom lines with a 57 points season, overshadowed by other players, while Crosby was immediately put in a position to succeed. Crosby reached 800 and 900 pts much faster than Jagr, but at 1000 they became very close.

Anyway, even though his fans often **** me off, congrats to Crosby. He's a very impressive player and this season is really proving something. His fans are not his fault, I respect the player for sure.

That's flawed as well. Crosby won't end his career at 1.32. You would have to consider players PPG at 29, not career PPG. He's probably not fifth when you consider PPG at 29, but I'm sure it's still very impressive, though.

His PPG dominance over his 12 year career vs. his peers is only clearly bettered by Wayne and Mario. It is slightly better than Howe's in his best 12 year period.

I think if we hypothetically give Jagr more icetime early on and Crosby hypothetically misses less games, the gap in the number of games to reach 1000 is even bigger.

It is crazy to think without injuries he'd likely have done it in at least 100 fewer games

Indeed it is crazy.

But there is no need to speculate: It didn't happen.

In 50 years, everyone will be talking about how OV got there in a shorter amount of time. Who cares about number of games?

Congrats to Sid. He has become an excellent all around player and has grown a lot since his whining days when he first entered the league.

Think about how much sooner he would have hit this milestone had he not lost so many games to concussions. Truly the best player in the sport right now.
