[2008] David Desharnais - Can he become an NHLer or is he too small?

David Desharnais
* Member of the Cincinnati Cyclones

HEIGHT: 5 feet, 6 inches (5'6")
WEIGHT: 180 LBS
AGE: 21-years old

GAMES: 48
GOALS: 14
ASSISTS: 53
POINTS: 67
+/-: +25
PIM: 12

Now the reason I ask this is because the kid is currently on a 21 game point streak! Over those 21 games he has scored 34 points.

Aside from going one game without a point before the 21 game point streak started, he scored 6 PTS in 2 games.

So over his last 24 GP he's scored 40 PTS.

He has scored in every single game the Cyclones have played in 2008.

I know he's really small.. but is there a possibility there? He seems really thick for his height...

EDIT: Corrected a little bit of info.

Is he a winger or center? And he might be a St.Louis I mean there have been ppl out there who tell players they are too small and they prove them wrong so /shrug time will tell.

He's a centre.

I forgot to mention this in the first post.. I've seen him play three times this season (never in junior).. and the guy is an offensive machine. I swear he probably doesn't know how to play defense because he's always working in the offensive zone.

5'6" and 180? Proportionally, that's similar to Bouillon (2 inches shorter, 15-20 pounds lighter). At 21, he could potentially put on a bit more muscle too. I'd be very interested in seeing what he can do with the Bulldogs at some point.

That last part might not go over big with Carbo.

He is tearing it up at the ECHL level but if he ever wants to play in the NHL, he will have to be a dominant player in the AHL. He is really small but I have always liked him because he is a hard worker. Let's hope we see him with the dogs soon but small or not, his production in the ECHL is very impressive.

That was meant to come off as a joke.. guess I did a bad job.

What I meant by it was that he doesn't have to play defense because whenever he is on the ice, he's in offensive zone because he dominates the play.

I do know if he ever made the NHL team, he'd be a fan favourite the first minute he stepped on the ice.. Partially due to his size and partially due to his skill.

As a Sags fan I've seen him play a lot and this guy is a true warrior...he neevr backs down from anything. However, I don't think he is fast enough to play in the NHL...he has great vision and tremendous playmaking potential...but I don't think he's fast enough...maybe he's improved that though.

No idea..

I don't think size has anything to do with it, small players can do it in the NHL.

I think he can easily dominate the AHL as well.

The NHL I'm not so sure about.

We'll see next year when he better be a full-time AHLer.

He never got a fair shake this year.

Is he a center?

If so, he's gotta knock off the likes of Maxwell and White next season.

Cincinnati is dominating the ECHL in large part thanks to him

but its the ECHL... Even Mathieu Aubin 6"3 208 right handed Center that we DESPERATELY need, cant even stay in the AHL consistently

There is a reason Deharnais is in the ECHL...

Hamilton seems to be doing alright now, but i think the Cyclones will win the ECHL title, and thats good an all, but its the lowest pro league people...

If he does become an NHLer it will not be with the Habs.

I have high hopes for the kid.

He's had his fair share of injuries, but this latest one is some freak charlie horse thing.

I have high hopes for him too. He's just too injury prone that I don't have hopes for his body holding up.

Not really dude...

Here are the others minor professional league that are lowest than the ECHL:

Internation Hockey League
Central Hockey League
Southern Professional Hockey League
Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey
Mid-Atlantic Hockey League

No such thing as too small.

If you are 5'1" but have Gretzky talent, you'll make it in the NHL. You might be overlooked, but hey, those teams will be kicking themselves when you come in.
