Really doesnt matter. Isles would move back to coli if all else fails before leaving NY. Bettman has already said owners are not loyal to brooklyn but to NY. They didnt buy this team just to move it to a market that failed already and now has 2 AHL teams lol These guys are extremly smart businessmen. Hartford has been doing this for years with NHL teams etc...Hartford will MAYBE happen wayyy down the line. Quebec and Seattle are next. If hartford is to ever get a team again (big if) they are at minimum 3rd in line. I believe we will see Quebec in 5 years or so and seattle shortly after (if not at the same time) NHL will be closed for expansion for a long while after that.

XL Center losing nearly $1M a year

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is proposing to spend $250 million on renovations to the XL Center though the venue lost close to $1 million in each of the previous four years, according to annual reports from the organization overseeing the building.

The city of Hartford owns the XL Center. It is overseen by the Capital Region Development Authority, a state agency, and managed by Spectra Venue Management.

In the current fiscal year, there is about a $1.9 million gap between operating costs and expenses, according to Terryl Mitchell Smith, director of marketing and management for the CRDA.

When factoring in the state's contribution to the XL Center of about $600,000 and the authority's funding of about $400,000, the net loss is expected to be about $900,000, she said.

That is a small improvement from the venue's previous years.

20 year flashback segment of a WFSB report about Hartford's plea to save the whalers.
2 cool segments, but also very depressing.

http://www.wfsb.com/clip/13163491/ha...ve-the-whalers

Fully paid by CT 147.5 million dollar arena (221.8 million in 2017 $)
The deal would have brought an estimated 51 million (76.6 million in 2017 $) in annual revenue to the whalers team.

Would have handed Karmanos the keys and he would make $$$ for EVERY event. Whalers, circus, disney on ice, concerts, UConn Men's and Women's basketball including 4 men's national championships 99, 04, 11, 14 and 11 women's championships 95,00,02,03,04,09,10,13,14,15,16 and currently 107 wins in a row. He would have gotten parking and concessions on ALL of those regular season games in Hartford. TV deal would have been very lucrative. IF they won the cup in Hartford in 06 and with all that UConn success, he would have made $$$$$$$$

In video, he thought the deal was "reckless" and he would lose 100 million ($150 million in 2017 $) in the 1st year of new arena.

Didn't want to pay the estimated 45 million or so in loses during the construction of arena. We offered 20 million. He lost 30 million in 97 and another 30 million 98 in greensboro. Had to pay 30 mil or so in upgrades to PNC.
CT wanted 10% ticket tax and 2.5 million a year rent for 20 years. 50 million over 20 yrs (75.1 million in 2017 $)

20 year lease. So would have ended around now. Isn't the Hartford deal sorta the same as the one he has @ PNC now?(not sure exactly) Best lease in the NHL right? :snakehead . #bringemback
They would be on TV more than just the monday last night on NBCSN.

According to video, Whalers brought in 72.9 million dollars in business (109.6 million in 2017 $) a year in Hartford County area. 896 jobs and 2.3 million in taxes (3.5 million in 2017 $).

New article on XL renovations

http://www.hartfordbusiness.com/arti...4PLXRU.twitter

Quote:
Luxurious Additions
A $250 million renovation would add new suites and luxury seating at the XL Center. Here's a breakdown:
• The existing building has a fan club with limited access to the bowl, 15 suites located 76 feet above the rink floor, 31 suites 87 feet above the rink floor, and a club at level 118.
• The transformed arena will have eight bunker suites located just above the rink floor, 14 suites located on the main concourse (30 feet above the rink floor) and 14 suites located 40 feet above the rink floor.
• In addition, there will be a club located at the rink floor level adjacent to the locker rooms, a loge club located on the east side of the main concourse, and a terrace club located on the west side of the main concourse.
• Some of the existing clubs and suites in the arena's upper levels will be transformed into a concourse bar and two sponsor suites, as well as a sports bar and ledge seats.
Officially, Hartford Wolfpack have no chance to make the playoffs. New ice making system and new dasher boards can start on schedule.

Tuesday, Freimuth said the replacement of the rink is a lengthy project. Nearly 14 inches of concrete and insulation that form the floor of the rink, all of it embedded with about 9 miles of steel pipe, must be torn out.

The system is original to the arena, and the steel pipes have corroded over time and leaks have been temporarily patched. But there are signs that the icing system remains troubled because there are "slushy" areas on the skating surface, Freimuth said.

The new system, which will take three months to install, will likely be replaced next summer, timed around the hockey and basketball seasons and other major events, such as concerts. The XL Center has about 55 events per year, plus practices that depend on the ice, including the AHL's Wolf Pack and UConn's Hockey East team.

What gets me is Karmanos saying the team would lose $45 million while waiting for the new arena. His payroll then was $25 million a year

http://www.sportsbusinesssims.com/nhl-team-payrolls.htm

Karmanos did not trust the Governor and later events unrelated to the Whalers indicate he had good reason not to. But as you pointed out UConn basketball exploded in 1999 and he would have cashed in on both the mens and womens teams. How much money did he lose in Greensboro for those 2 years waiting for the arena in Raleigh?

It never should have happened.

Part of me thinks that if Karmanos had gotten the Hartford arena deal and all the revenue attached to it, UConn's presence in Hartford would have been very different over these past 20 years. I will admit I am unfamiliar with UConn's current arrangement re: revenue with the city of Hartford, but I can't imagine that through all of UConn's mens and womens success they would have just used the Hartford arena and given all the revenue to PK.

Karmanos was just not interested in staying in Hartford and I am willing to bet Bettman convinced him to just go to Carolina regardless of what he is offered. Bettman's big thing in those days was getting a larger presence with national deals for major networks. He thought the lack of teams in huge pockets of the south, southwest, and even rockies hurt them. Networks like Fox were hesitant to pick up more weeks because many of their affiliates didn't want it. I was going to school in Ithaca, NY during 95-96. I remember that season they had games on Fox for 3 weeks in February, and then again the last few weeks of the season. The 3 games in February were not on the Fox affiliates I had in Ithaca. They were showing college bball instead. Ithaca was only 2-3 hours from Buffalo and 5-6 hours from NYC. Can't imagine an affiliate in Raleigh, Charlotte, Nashville would want hockey.

Hartford won't get a major league team, but they could get the NHL.

Even with upgrades, is it worth moving to an old arena when you can just go back to Nassau, where a lot of your fans also happen to be?

I wish we were allowed to drag Raleigh on this board the way we're allowed to drag Hartford.

Cool video in link above showing the under belly of the arena that most don't see.
I heard the arena still has to use 60/70's style rotary phones to communicate within the arena!!

XL Center
Capital Improvements – Capital projects at XL and in the Church Street garage are progressing, with bids for the ice slab work expected to be released in about a week. Installation of the new ice floor is expected to begin in late May and finish up in late August. This summer shutdown will impact the facility’s operating budget and Global Spectrum is working to mitigate that impact as much as possible. Bob Saint further explained the details regarding replacing the slab of refrigeration and piping. The slab is being replaced from the insulation up. The upper slab will be demolished, they will repair the lower slab if needed, then build up new insulation, piping, reinforcing new concrete. The dasher system is also being replaced.

Transformation Plan – Funding for transformation of the XL Center has been included in the Governor’s 2018-19 bond package and now awaits approval by the General Assembly.

Wolfpack Renewal –MSG, the owner of the Wolfpack AHL franchise, has committed to play a fifth year at XL. This is the final year of the team’s contract and additional seasons will need to be negotiated. The franchise fee paid for the team is one of the highest in the league and this will likely be a topic of discussion in any contract extension.
So now we got Calgary, Islanders, Carolina, Arizona, and FL in 2023. Which owner wants a free tax payer arena in the hockey hotbed of New England? I'm joking, but sorta serious. I'm sure Hartford will be used as a bargaining chip with city leaders and will probably end up with a fully tax payer funded arena for UConn and the unwanted AHL ranger affiliate. But, time will tell. Many 90's style arenas are getting old, and Hartford could capitalize on getting the renovations done regardless. THe XL is almost 43 years old and is been long overdue for renovations regardless of the NHL. Again, watch the video in 1st link…

This probably belongs in the history of hockey board, but this is a sweet podcast by a Tampa Bay Lightning podcaster Matt Sammon. 38 yrs ago, March 30th 1979, the Hartford Whalers joined the NHL.

https://www.nhl.com/lightning/news/t...rs/c-288232688

Bunch of history, old interviews etc… Hear from Joel Quenneville, Kevin Dineen, Dave Tippett, Chuck Kaiton, Rick Peckham, and Mark Pukalo relive the Whalers; glory days, and hasty exit.

It's 43 years old, so build a new arena and stop with the charade.
