To put it mildly, I wasn't impressed by the level of AUS officiating last night starting with the hit on Pettgrave, the mentioned hook on Beauvillier that led to a goal (hooks that lead to turnovers are usually called even in the AUS) and the free jab at Marcoux in the 3rd when he had the puck covered in his crease. However, X took advantage of the non calls and were more disciplined in both games.
Lots of incentive for UNB!

Honest question, V-Reds fans: Is there some serious concern about Marcoux? An .865 playoff sv% is not sub-par- it's much worse than that.

I honestly wasn't impressed, thought that he could have played better, not sure if it was because I was comparing him to Marchand or not, but he definitely didn't shine like Marchard did! He will need to play a lot better if UNB hopes to bring home the National Title again.

The call or non call on Pettgrave was borderline, guaranteed if it was Thomas throwing the check, it would have been a penalty. The play on Frankie, thought it was the right call once I saw the replay even though it lead to a goal. I don't understand the non call on the poke at Marcoux, it wasn't even close to the whistle, and then the high stick non call in the last minute, how is that not called, stick hit the player in the face, time of game should not dictate if it is a penalty or not.
Overall, even with the calls and non calls, thought that we got better officiating than we normally do. Even though the bar has not been set real high! lol

It was nice to read Bill Hunt calling out the AUS in his latest column for their lack of transparency when it comes to suspensions.

Quite simply, he needs to be way better. You can get away with a below average save percentage in the regular season when you are only giving up 16-18 shots/game, but not in the playoffs when you are going to be facing better teams and more shots. On the bright side, he wasn't that good against X last year and then was great at Nationals in giving up only 2 goals.

Damn, when was this, I totally missed it, I would have liked to have read that. Very uncommon for someone to call them out. Good on Bill!

I read it online earlier this evening ("back from the west and a little grouchy" was the title of the article)...might not be in the print version until tomorrow.

Was an interesting article for sure, but unfortunately I don't suspect that it will have any effect on how the AUS handles things. But at least he said what so many of us think.

Loved this line in the U Sports game recap...

Quote:
MacDougall, who is known to be an active recruiter, said he would likely be on the phone again tonight, building for the future.
No time to rest apparently...lots of work to do.

LOL, I suspect that he already has a few recruits in mind, don't think that there will be any issues finding players willing to come to Fredericton.

In 2009, when they won in Lakehead, they were texting candidates from the ice during the celebration and telling them to tune into the game and see the celebration. Recruiting never stops.

As asked in the UCup Thread - who is gone?

These guys can't come back.

5th Year
Braes
Minardi
Critchlow

Have to think most of these guys aren't coming back. Either graduating or close enough that they can leave and finish later. Thomas is starting in a new degree. Some might have taken a light course load. Others may go to grad school, but I have to think Murray and Maillet are likely gone.

4th Year
Halley
Maillet
Murray
Petgrave
Willick
Thomas

Some of these guys might be gone if they bulked up on courses before coming (like Randy). Beauvillier has the best chance at a contract.

3rd Year
Beauvillier
Boudens
Brace
Caissy
Gazzola (reported as graduating)
Suellentrop
Trainor

Other than Marcoux, they should all be back.

2nd Year
Anderson
McIvor
Clapperton
Dubeau
Marcoux (reported that he had 2 years of courses done)

1st Year
Murphy
Simpson
Cooper

Recruit - Trey Lewis

So, if we take what we know (3) and add Maillet, Murray, Marcoux, Gazzola plus Willick & Beauvillier (just speculation) - they would need 8 impact rookies (one of which is a goalie) plus Lewis.

The recruits would have to replace 3-15-10-23-14-6-6-5 = 82/142 = 58% of the goal production.

Yes, Willick also graduates this year. Although I believe he does very well academically so wouldn't be surprised to see him continue his studies.

Also, it will be interesting to see what happens with Trainor after what was reported today.

He was charged with a DUI in December and was in court today to plead guilty according to an article in the Gleaner.

UNB AD John Richard said that there could be further punishment from the university ("certainly there will be a consequence to this action").

However, the article has been updated and notes MacDougall already dealt with the situation at a team level back when it happened in December. He didn't say exactly what the punishment was, just that it was dealt with in a "very direct and very positive fashion."

Perhaps that is the reason that he did not get to play? Doesn't explain the beginning of the season, but could explain the second half? Sorry to hear about it, hopefully he learns from his mistake.

Beauvillier just signed a tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose.. if anyone could stop by the Moose thread in the Jets forum to offer a scouting report, it would be greatly appreciated!

Not just for the DUI. He didn't even play last season. Hardly played the season before. He is just taking up a roster spot. As long as the AUS has a cap this is a potential problem.

He's not part of the "cap" if he doesn't dress for any games.

It's not as if the cap has hurt the V-Reds? Three straight finals.
he wasn't the only one who didn't play much.
Look at Alberta, they had double the bodies sitting, do you hear of any problems?
Are we over analyzing the situation?

On another note, I have been one to speak out against the cap.
So far it hasn't hurt UNB, but it certainly has SMU, especially at times this year.
Ex: 14 dressed for a game at the AUC in the second half.
But, if there are less bodies in the stands, obviously you are going to have less friction among the group.
