I would induct the following immediately:

Dale Hawerchuk
Thomas Steen
Teppo Numminen
Teemu Selanne

It's not a stretch to say that without Gobuty, the Winnipeg Jets 1.0 wouldn't have happened.

And without Jets 1.0, would there be a Winnipeg Jets in the NHL today?

In November, 1978, his friend Nelson Skalbania called to say he was folding the Indianapolis Racers – and offered a 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky to the Jets.

Gobuty got on his plane and flew to Indianapolis, watched Gretzky play then took him out for dinner.

For years legend had it Gobuty lost Gretzky to the Edmonton Oilers over a backgammon game, a myth Gobuty is quick to debunk.

“We played backgammon, but it was not for Wayne,” Gobuty said. “Wayne stayed two days in my house. I had the opportunity to get him. I had partners, and the late great Rudy Pilous (then Jets GM) said he's too skinny.”

Gretzky, of course, would go on to lead a dominant Oilers team that was the thorn in the side of the Jets for years to come.

“The stupidest move I ever did,” Gobuty said. “I wasn't quick enough.”
I hope Ben Hatskin and Micheal Gobuty are recognized by True North in the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame.

It wouldn't have changed much. The Jets team that existed at the end of the WHA era was a shadow of it's former self.

It's a discussion that's worthy of it's own thread. If I find time I'll start one up. For now I'll just posit that a 1979 Jets team left intact would have been in tough going into the NHL.

To wit: our top goalie was Gary Smith. Daley had a 4.3 GAA. Hull was 40 years old. Hedberg was gone. Etc etc.

Give the 1978-79 roster a good look and tell me that it was an imposing roster.

No, I was referring to the Jets of 1977-78. That was the team that defeated the Soviet national squad. If it was that Jets team that entered the NHL it's very likely that our history would have been much different. However, even the 1978-79 team would have been way better than that sorry lot that started the first year in the NHL.

Only thing that bothers me is the banners. Couldn't they have just made a mural at MTS Centre or something?

I assume Pavs will have to wait 5 years before his banner is in the rafters.

It's great to see that they've done that. Looking forward to seeing more players inducted into the Jets Hall of Fame.

They have to assess the girders first. That takes two engineering companies.
