Steve Ott

The guy deserves his own thread, has been one of the better deadline pickups for us. Will be interesting to see if they bring him back next year or not.

I was one of the few that was happy the second the trade was announced to bring him in. I was actually pretty vocal about signing him two or three summers ago. Better now than never I guess but at this point, I wouldnt re-sign him. He's on a serious decline.

I wanted the habs to get Ott years ago. Awesome to have him now and for so cheap too. Great deadline acquisition. BargainBin special.

This move probably has Kirk Muller fingerprints all over it as well.

he would be cheap though, he's getting 800K but I would think you could get him for less then that. The problem is would he block McCarron who I'm guessing is the 4th line center next year. But since it was always Ott or McCarron playing since he was brought in, although perhaps you could still bring him back on a one year deal on the cheap as it gives you some insurance if McCarron struggles. Perhaps they could tell him he won't play all the time but fill in from time to time. Interesting to see what they will do.

He can also play on the wing, he'd be a perfect depth guy since Flynn will most likely be gone.

A fourth line of Ott - McCarron - Mitchell would be nice, Ott can still help out on faceoffs on the left side of the ice.

Could be. I know Muller likes the guy and why not? He's an X factor out there. Not the best hockey player but he holds his own and gets in the opposition's head. We have guys to back up his antics too. This is a tough team and agitators like Ott thrive in those environments.

He also reminds me of a Tom Kostopoulos type of guy who even though he's not a great fighter, he'll stick up for teammates and take a beating if he needs to.

I thought he was completely finished to be honest. He's not the borderline 2nd liner a-la-Shaw that he once was for, what, a season or two, but he isn't 14th forward material/AHL'er either.

And he looks like Dustin Kensrue, which is all sorts of weird.

I wonder why they didn't sit King more then and go with Ott McCarron then. I could see a Ott McCarron Mitchell line, with DLR getting in there as well.

Doubt it
He's good in the playoffs because he can face the same players over and over again and be a pain in the ass, but his effectiveness is limited in the reg. season when he faces new players every day

As good as he has been in his role I would rather not resign him.

De La Rose will have to clear waivers next year. McCarron could be full time fourth line centre. Never know if Hudon or Scherbak or any other rookie/import or free agent take up a roster spot.

I would prefer to give youth a chance over Ott next year. But with that said if the Habs need more depth grit then a cheap rental like Ott is a good pickup.

I'd make Ott's re-signing contingent on how well he does throughout the playoffs. There's no one like him on the Habs, it's an effective role, especially when the team has a lead. I'm not certain McCarron is ready to step in and certainly, his style of play doesn't emulate what Ott can do.

And since it's a thread fully dedicated to Ott, here are some of his antics and moments all in one place:

Gallagher taking a jab at Ott about a year ago:

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens have their own on-ice troll in the form of Brandon Gallagher. The young forward got in a pretty good burn on Ott during the Canadiens 3-0 victory of the Blues on Tuesday night.

During the game Gallagher asked Ott how long he has been in the NHL, to which Ott told him 15 years. Gallagher replied by telling him “15 years is a long time to do nothing at all!”

Thanks Brandon for telling Steve Ott exactly what we were all thinking!
There are also fights involving Ott and Beaulieu, and Bouillon as well on YouTube.

And these:

Agree 100%. Squeeze everything we can out of him for this playoff run but I just dont get the feeling he can be as effective again next year. Mroe than ever this is just a young mans league now

I like googly faces as much as the next guy but I'm not convinced he can still play. He couldn't negotiate simple pass receptions last night and has generally handled the puck like a grenade. Sub 50% on faceoffs.

I like his general grittiness and his ability to avoid stupid penalties thus far. But he hasn't been altogether good so far in the series. If we sat him and played DLR or Mac I don't think he'd be missed.

Was that really necessary? I spent a lot of time digging out and producing the above images.

Could you not have made your point with that deprecating prequel?

If the "googly faces" are an issue, I'll remove them. Sheesh.

Don't know if he will be back with anyone next season but enjoyed him while it lasted.

He comes across as very well spoken, I could see a good future for him in the game somewhere...coaching, exec, media...

Was fun to watch during the playoffs, can't say the same about many other players on the team.

He's a decent depth guy to have but no big deal if he's not back next year. We got much bigger fish to fry!
