Economic impact of playoffs 2017

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/oil...4.html?src=rss

After 11 years of missing the playoffs, fan fever is high in Edmonton.

Quote:
"I'm seeing sales increase by over 1,000 per cent each week," said Evan Parker, sales manager at Sport Chek in Edmonton City Centre Mall. "I can't get these things in fast enough."
Parker said the most popular items are Oilers T-shirts, followed by the new orange team jersey.
Not surprisingly, the most popular Oilers T-shirts and jerseys bear the name of team captain Connor McDavid.
"All my McDavids I sold out the day after they clinched the playoff spot," Parker said.
...
Parker, the Sport Chek sales manager, said he's scheduling more staff on game days to handle the extra demand for Oilers merchandise.
"I schedule two, three, sometimes even four extra staff," he said. "That's how much extra traffic we're seeing on game days."
Nice to see that bump.

Good to see for sure. The impact of a hockey team is pretty good. You'll also see increased traffic in restaurants and bars. Hotels as well with travelling fans.

Elsewhere is takes one playoff miss to drop the fan fever but takes a few appearances to make the fever come back. Go figure why.

If I was scheduling the playoffs, we'd be starting on a saturday night. Give retailers (including their own team stores) to stock up and be able to sell product. Those extra days would be great for businesses to properly prepare.
