Sundin almost traded to Montreal - per Ottawa Sun

the Ottawa Sun is reporting that a trade between montreal and toronto was agreed upon by BOTH GM's that would have seen Sundin come to Montreal for HIGGINS, our 1st,2nd and 3rd.

but Sundin said no I want to stay and help my team

A deal was also sent to the NHL office that would have seen Kaberle sent to Philly for Jeff Carter and their first round pick..

plus the trades for Kilger, Gill and the other guy(which i forget right now)

Toronto would have had HIggins CArter and 3 first round picks, 3 2nd round picks and 3 third round picks..

plus both guys could have gone back in the off season....

Man I am glad Sundin is a habs fan...cause he sure as hel l didint help the leafs the way he could have..

but man Higgins and our picks for sundin... I wouldnt have been real happy with that

Must be Garrioch.
Garrioch = nonsense.

I don't believe one word written above by the Sun.

edit: Article was written by Simmons, but I still question the details.

They said this on TV the other day also, I don't remember if it was in the HotStove one week ago or somewhere else. Except it was Higgins Grabs and a 1st for Sundin.

ouffff. I'm lucky it didn't happen. I wouldn't have given Higgins for 2 months of Sundin. So with 3 picks, it would have been terrible.

I still don't believe that Gainey would make such an extravagant offer, but this will definitely put the wind in the sails of the fans and media who are critical of Sundin's decision.

It's too bad really, because he's a great player who deserves better than the Toronto circus.

Right, yep, I so believe that one...also, we had a deal where Crosby and Malkin were coming over for Corey Locke and Corey Urquhart, seems the Pens wanted to market the pair as Pittsburgh's version of the two Coreys, they wrre going to pair them up as room-mates and have them followed around 24/7 and they'd be promoting all knds of soft drinks and t-shirts, its a genius idea, unlimited revenue potential...but Bettman nixed the idea fearing potential copyright infringements...this is a true story, just ask any Sun reporter.

It's the Ottawa Sun. I'd hardly call that "reporting".

How great is it that you talk about something that will never be able to be verified.....

I also heard from a very reliable source that Sydney Crosby was coming over to MTL for Dandeneault and that also Ovechkin was coming over for Brisebois.

See? I may not be a reporter but i too can say anything and since it cant be verified it must be true!

I really hope this rumor is wrong. If it's true, what a relief it never worked out...

that is true.. kaberle couldnt go back.. but sundin could have...
I am glad it never went through.. I hate sundin... he probably could have helped in the playoffs. but then all the leaf fans would have been taking some sort of credit that we need a leaf to get help...

And I do believe HIggins over the next 4 years is going to be huge for us.

The only validity to this is if Sundin agreed to stick around for at least one year.

so let me get this straight, gainey a man of his word AND carbo BOTH tell higgins he is NOT being dealt before the deadline. the globe's Stephen Brunt in montreal to cover gainey's jersey retirement is told informally that higgins is 'never on the table' to be traded...and the habs turn around and deal their 24 year old A-captain and 3 picks to the leafs for a rental with their most hated divisional foe- who subsequently gets injured?

simmons is an idiot

Gainey would not move Higgins for a rental, so the reason it didn't get done would have been because Sundin refused to re-sign with Montreal. Sundin didn't land in Montreal for the same reason Hossa didn't. Gainey did not want to overapay for a RENTAL

As previously stated, thank you, Sundin.

Riiiiiiiight. So Bob was willing to trade him for Sundin but not Hossa?

Yeah that makes sense!
