I dont see how this can be true. Gainey refused to trade Higgins to Atlanta for Hossa because he was a rental. Why would he accept to trade Higgins to Toronto for Sundin who you would have even less chances to resign...makes no rational sense to me (but that just might be me).
so let me get this straight, gainey a man of his word AND carbo BOTH tell higgins he is NOT being dealt before the deadline. the globe's Stephen Brunt in montreal to cover gainey's jersey retirement is told informally that higgins is 'never on the table' to be traded...and the habs turn around and deal their 24 year old A-captain and 3 picks to the leafs for a rental with their most hated divisional foe- who subsequently gets injured?
simmons is an idiot
I think this is a counter punch to Damien Cox's Toronto Star article that complimented Gainey on his deadline day leadership. Simmons often looks for the Toronto market one-up story, especially when he scoops his chief rival.
I personally find his account ridiculous and without a shred of credibility.
But Simmons is not looking for fans like me to find his story compelling, he's going after the Sun readers that are looking for a new Leaf scapegoat and have Sundin in their sights.
The calls of "look what great shape the Leafs would be in had these players signed their NTC clauses" is a theme that Toronto area fans are going to hear from their media for quite some time. As long as it resonates with Leaf fans and sells papers and online mouse clicks, it's the theme-du-jour.
Regardless of if the Habs part of it is true, I know for a fact that the Carter-Kaberle part is true and Kaberle would not waive his NTC. If Sundin would waive his I'm sure Toronto could have gotten a package like the one the article suggests. Those NTC's are REALLY hurting Toronto...and the icing on top is they are not close to a playoff spot and a couple of spots from a lottery pick, the worst of both worlds. Toronto's mess is worse than Edmonton Tampa Florida LA or Atlanta.
Regarding Sundin, Don Cherry of all people said, that Mats didn't want to leave for a contender, because of a hip problem, and didn't want to play for 2 more months, which has some validity...that being said, as great a player Sundin is, why would you want a guy who doesn't want to try to win the Cup with another franchise? I know there are 2 sides to every story, but come on Mats, we are talking the Stanley Cup, and a chance to make the Leafs better?

If we were faced with the same situation, a losing season with Koivu a free agent at the end of the year, I would want Koivu to stay. His importance to our club is sadly underrated by many, and the same can be said about Sundin and the Leafs. They've been a mediocre team doing better than they should under his wing. In Sundin's mind, the only way to make the Leafs better is to win not tank for draft picks. That's how hockey players should think.
how about if I start a dumb rumor with the same credibility as the sun.
Sundin wanted to come to MTL for free just to stick it to the Leaf nation but Gainey refused because Sundin wanted to play with players of the same kind as in Toronto, like Begin and Kostopolos and Sundin said it's Begin or nothing so it was nothing.
The guy with absolutely no connections to Montreal. (Although to be fair, few do).
The guy who pretty much completely ruined his credibility and contacts within the Leafs organization by falsely reporting that Mats Sundin needed career-threatening hip surgery last year.
This guy claims to be the only one who knew the intimate details of a trade involving the 2 biggest hockey markets in the world, that just happens to include the aforementioned player that pretty much came out last year and said he was an idiot.
Not to mention that the Canadiens refused to make a similar deal for a rental player because it involved the exact same player they don't want to trade.
Sorry Steve, but that just doesn't add up to me... Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong, but you really haven't earned the benefit of the doubt.
Admittedly, this is Steve Simmons, but he wrote today that Sundin rejected a trade that was completed, pending his blessing. The trade would have sent Chris Higgins and our 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick to Toronto for the Leafs Captain.
He also says that Kaberle killed a trade for Jeff Carter and a 1st.
If all true, that is a kick in the nuts for Leaf fans.
On the other hand, I think Montreal dodged a bullet given Sundin got hurt, but interesting nonetheless.
alright.. now that we all pretty much agree that it probably never happened.. even though none of would have thought huet for a 2nd ... would sundin for higgins (since we are deep in talent right now and draft choices arent that important right now)... would sundin have helped us..
