Kevin Shattenkirk

Shattenkirk is probably going to get 7 x $ 7 mil deal this summer. His point totals are 13 goals and 43 assists in the regular season and 2 assists in the playoffs. However, he has struggled defensively a little bit against the Maple Leafs, and for instance last night game he played only 12:54.

Some commentator (I don't remember who) said that many execs think Shattenkirk is a great PP asset but only TOP4 or even TOP6 dman, and the question is do you want to pay $7 mil / year for a second or third pairing dman.

Thoughts?

Depends on the situation and team, but try #2 defenseman. He's not the best offensively on the 5 on 5, but he's fantastic on the Power Play and very good defensively. I have zero idea where this reputation that he's bad defensively comes from. People just have a tendency to automatically assume that defenseman that get points and play on the PP must be bad at defense.

I thought he was real good in games 1 and 2 but disappeared a bit in Toronto.

Good player but if 7y/$49 is the going rate, hard pass.

Someone's going to overpay for him. 2nd pair dman who's good on the PP.

I keep hearing about how bad he is defensively but opponents still can't seem to shoot or score when he's on the ice

How did he play under 13 minutes? He must have been hurt, no?

Probably a result of protecting a lead. Niskanen/Carlson are a little bit more reliable defensively and capable of eating up big minutes on the right side.

I believe you're onto something. I was watching the Caps feed and they zoomed in on him when he was making a pass out of his zone. A Leafs forward hit him and he was grimacing in pain after that hit. He could be hurt.

Niskanen, yes.

Carlson, not really.

Carlson absolutely hemorrhages shots against and goals against.

He's not bad defensively, it's just relative to his team mates he can definitely play better. But the Blues are an elite defensive team, and Washington is kinda one as well.

hes an elite/1st pairing D in the offensive zone...a good solid/2nd pairing D in the neutral zone...and a poor mediocre 3rd pairing D in the defensive zone

It all depends on the cap situation of the teams. If NYR didnt have the Staal and Girardi contracts it would be a nobrainer for us. Might still be that because Shatty would easily be our 2nd best defensemen

Just my 2 cents as somebody who predicts he ends up playing for the Rangers. The Rangers will do something to get Vegas to take a big contract from them, opening up room to sign Shettenkirk. If they can't get Vegas to take Girardi's contract them might be able to dump him to a team desperate for defense

This actually sounds like the most Rangers thing to do ever.

He is a poor version of Mike Green. He is simply not that great as some people say he is. He doesn't deserve more than 5.5-6 million per year.

2nd pairing PP specialist who cant make a good breakout pass. best setup is played on 3rd pairing next to a strong defensive dman. can actually kill penalties though which is surprising considering his defensive 5v5 struggles

good at 5.5 mil, bad at more than that

He has a NMC. No team is taking Girardi anyway. He is useless

I think a team needing an offensive defenseman will sign him. Wouldn't surprise me if Vegas gave him an offer in an effort to make a splash.

This.

It doesn't matter if hes worth 7x7. Hes a good player that you need to overpay for to get... like every other UFA who has multiple teams after him.
