I mean he's almost 31, so his decline isn't that far from now. Or it is?

Degrading since 2010? Then Crosby has been degrading as well.

What makes you think he would slow down so much? He's 31, I think he has another 3yrs before he really really drops points wise, maybe even then he'll be a 70pt guy. His PPG this year would have put him in another pretty solid year offensively.

I don't know but he seems to get injured every year so that could slow him down sooner than he would if he was healthier. Even then he has the skills to be at least a useful player for a long time. Nothing would surprise me unless he retires this season or plays until he is 50.

Malkin's problem is that he loves to play, the guy will be gimped and he will still say yes to playing for his home country if the Pens were out right now. He's just that kind of dude, if the Pens go deep in the playoffs this year, he'll have another short summer to recover.

It's tough when you're still not 100% from last season and this season starts and you're already hobbled with other injuries. Malkin will be fine, he just need to rest when he could be resting. The best thing for him is probably knocking the Jackets out in 5, he'll have maybe 4-5 days of rest.

He'll be good until he hangs them up. Even when his body slows down he still has elite hands, IQ, and a deadly shot. It's very rare for players of his caliber to completely fall off.

Ovi literally has got 30 goals in every single season he's played and has won 4 Richards since 2010. How on earth do you think he's degrading..

He's no top 100 player but I think 3 more years of ppg or near ppg then he's going to need someone help carry the line.

For as long as he's not injured. He's only played 4 seasons of 70+ games, and I suppose 43 in the lockout-shortened season. Hard to see him becoming more durable in his mid-30s.

Until he's 34-35? I don't know what you're wanting here.

Malkin has been declining for years. He's barely an average player at this point. Might even retire on a "high note" if the Pens win this year despite his play.

Because he was really, really, really good from 2007-2010 and hasn't come close to that peak. Doesn't make him a bad player now but statistically he is clearly not in peak form.

Ovechkin's first 5 seasons:
396GP 269G 260A 529P, 1.34 points per game, 4 105+ point seasons, 2 110+ point seasons

Ovechkin's last 7 seasons:
525GP 289G 217A 506P, 0.96 points per game, 2 80+ point seasons, 0 90+ point seasons

You can say a player has declined, or 'degraded' and it doesn't mean that they suck. I don't know how anyone could possibly argue that Ovechkin is as dominant as at his peak (which, there's nothing wrong with that, it was a ridiculously good peak).

Scoring is continuing to go down so I'm sure you would notice somewhat of a decline for Crosby and Malkin too, just less dramatic as they are still among the points per game leaders every year and Ovechkin is not.

Malkin has amazing vision and hockey iq that will keep him an elite player until around 35 imo. I don't see him winning any more art rosses as his body can't hold up over 82 games without getting dinged up, but i can see him winning conn smythe(s).

He was like 2 pts behind McDavid for NHL scoring lead and gaining until he got that weird injury from a puck that hit him in the shoulder. Did we ever get an explanation for what the problem was? very strange a puck kept him out like 5 weeks.

He could have been 50/50 to win the Art Ross just this season. hard to predict a drop off for a guy who is top 5 in the league.

Id say hes got a few good seasons left. His play style doesnt rely on explosivespeed or strength really so i could seem staying good till 35 or so. Injuries are his biggest barrier at this point

There is no reason to believe he's going to slow down anytime soon. Just because he's over 30 doesn't mean he'll suddenly drop off. Thornton had a PPG season last year

Speaking as a Jackets fan, hopefully he precipitously declines next year...

It took the second post before it was officially derailed into an Ovi vs. Malkin thread.

Probably another 3 years or so until he gradually declines into "simply" a very good 1st liner.
