Not for Stamkos.... I think he's at the same level as a Toews and I've said before I wouldn't trade Price for Toews....
For the first overall pick in 2009, right now I would do it for Tavares.... However, you can't guarantee who will be number 1 till after next years lottery... and in one years time Carey may have done enough to change my mind.
Top prospect forwards come up at the draft almost every year.
Crosby type players come up every 10 years or so.
top goalie prospects like Price come up every 5-10 years also but in the case of goalies, being that only a few goalies come up every year, it's much harder to land that franchise goalie.
The Habs have that franchise goalie now and even better Halak is a gem also. Perhaps not quite as good as Price, but Halak is a great find and looking like most every other teams #1 goalie.
It's a huge advantage for the Habs and is making the other GM's just drool.
Goalies don't score goals so they never look as sexy on the highlight reals, unless your thinking about actually winning the game of course.
Halak shuts out the worst offense in the league with basically an AHL lineup and now people want to trade Price...shocking. Remember when Price shut out the #1 team in the Eastern Conference, ya good times...
It's not about Price hating, its about Maximizing ur assets (no one could identify me as a price hater i was one of the first on the bandwagon - i.e. when he got drafted )
I would maybe for Tavares... IF Tavares really was the glitch in the matrix and proved himself to be Sid The Kid 2.0 that's only supposed to come every 10 years. Why? Because Halak wouldn't land that pick that's why...otherwise I'd trade Halak instead of price.
I wouldn't because after the game against New Jersey, Price proved that he can play in this league and Stamkos is no more than a glorified prospect (right now) and might be the next Joe Thornton or the next Alexandre Daigle. We don't know and won't know until the '08/'09/'10 seasons (provided that he makes the team he is drafted to).
No....I'd rather keep Price and make him and Halak compete for the #1 spot next year and then make a decision on who would be the better player to keep and who would be better to trade away based on that competition.
We could get a decent return for either of these goalies, but they are both relatively unproven at the NHL level so we should make them compete next season and see who wants the #1 job more, then trade away the goalie that finishes 2nd for a goal scoring forward or another solid, stay at home defencemen and get an aging goaltender like Kolzig or Hedberg to be their backup.
Price is a rookie and is already at least a middle-of-the-road goaltender. As much as it would be nice to have Stamkos or Tavares (I'd take Stamkos, personally) goaltending depth in the NHL is so poor right now that you can't afford to trade away decent (or better) goaltending unless you've already got a suitable replacement or are willing to overpay for one via trade or UFA. I don't think this franchise is in a position to do that.
For the record, I do consider Halak to be a downgrade. I'm hoping we can bring Halak along like Toskala and then deal him for a similar package that Toronto paid.
I don't get the "Look at the standings" bit. Considering it's Huet that brought us there. He did all the work in net.
That said, I would never trade Price. Unless it's for Lecavalier. If a deal could be reached this summer wheras Tampa cannot re-sign him or he do not want to resign, I think Price for any teams would be a too great offer to pass up so us offering him would place us almost certain first in the Vinny sweepstakes. And i'm just too afraid to wait next year for Vinny. Let's do this right away this summer.
