GDT: Flames @ Blue Jackets, 5:00 MDT (Sportsnet West/Fan 960)

Calgary Flames: 37-25-10, 2nd in Northwest , 6th in Western Conference

@

Columbus Blue Jackets: 32-29-11, 3rd in Central, 12th in Western Conference

Thankfully the last 5pm start time for the Flames this season.

This game will be the 4th and final time these clubs meet this regular season, with the Flames holding the season series edge at 2-0-1, with the most recent game ending in a 1-0 win for the Flames, back on March 4th. This will also be the last game this season that Calgary plays against a team not in the Northwest division.

Pre-Game report:
http://flames.nhl.com/team/app?gameN...8&service=page

With some of the injuries recently to the Flames, most notably Tanguay, Warrener and Nystrom, I expect Marcus Nilson to get a boatload of icetime playing on the second line. My other guess is that David Hale will sit again tonight, keeping Anders Eriksson in the line-up. No official word on the lines however. Expect Mikka Kiprusoff to start.

The Flames broke a 2 game losing streak with a win against Chicago on Sunday, while the Blue Jackets are on a one game winning streak after beating Detroit on Sunday.

Injuries: Pascal Leclaire and David Vyborny are out for the Jackets, while Warrener, Tanguay and Nystrom are out for Calgary.

Keys to tonights game:
  • Score early: Always a given, but Columbus has a 0.174 win percentage when trailing after 1
  • Control the dot: Columbus has one of the best face-off teams in the league.
  • Let's get physical: Apparently the Blue Jackets are not too pleased with the Langkow slash on Boll last game. Look for the Jackets to come out hitting, so we need to be prepared.

The last game against non-NW opponents is huge. Let's try to create a little more space before the last stretch of games. Here's hoping Iginla and Huselius can remain hot and Kipper can own the Jackets one more time this season. Let's pick up these 2points!

GO FLAMES GO!!!

Should make for a good physical game.

Quote:
"Oh, yeah, I remember" Langkow's slash, Blue Jackets center Dan Fritsche said. "Boller's going to want to go after them, but he's smart enough not to do anything stupid.

"We're going to be all over Calgary. It's going to be a physical game. Langkow's probably going to be at the top of the list."

Quote:
"It'll be up to Jared to deal with that," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He knows how to handle those situations, so he'll be fine."

Fritsche wants Boll to have lots of help.

"We need everybody to step it up and play the hardest, most physical game of the year," Fritsche said. "Every game against Calgary, that's all it is -- who's going to win the puck battles, who's going to be more physical."

Quote:
Flames coach Mike Keenan said he didn't remember the incident. Told that the Blue Jackets might get physical, he said, "Oh, good."

Typically, the Flames tend to thrive in physical games.

"Hey, if (the Blue Jackets) take a couple of penalties because they've got something they want to do, that would be great with us," center Craig Conroy said. "It might even get us into the game a little earlier.

"We have a lot of guys who don't mind the physical play."

Tanguay a GTD

Quote:
Alex Tanguay, who broke the big toe in his left foot Sunday in Chicago, took the ice for Tuesday morning's optional skate and will probably be available for the game against Columbus. Officially, he's listed as a game-time decision.

Eric Nystrom, who had his proverbial rung by the Blackhawks' Adam Burish in a fight, also returned to the ice after sitting out Monday's practice. He won't play tonight, which means either Dustin Boyd or David Moss gets in. Because Boyd can play left wing, Boyd seems the more likely candidate.

Speaking of Nystrom's fight, Burish apparently made his way over to the visitors' dressing room at the United Center on Sunday because he was concerned about the rookie's condition. Just another example of honour among tough guys and "The Code" everyone keeps talking about.

In net Tuesday, it'll be Fredrik Norrena vs. Miikka Kiprusoff.

Where did all of this between Langkow and Boll come from? I don't remember anything like that last game happening between these 2 teams. I am expecting another typical Jackets/Flames game - nothing special, nothing more, nothing less. What's the story?

Boll crashed into the boards with Langkow near the penalty boxes late in the first period. As Boll skated away, Langkow spun his body around on the ice and struck Boll with the blade of his stick behind the knee.

It looked like the mother of all diving penalties, and Flames right winger Jarome Iginla accused him of just that.

But Langkow struck Boll's perennial nerve, just above the knee at the base of the hamstring.

"My whole leg was numb," Boll said. "It hurt, but it wasn't the hurt so much as I just couldn't really feel my leg. It's the weirdest feeling I've ever had.

"It lasted a while, too. I came back (in the third period), but my leg felt different for the whole next week. It's like how it feels when you sleep on your hand wrong."

Expected Jackets' lines:

Nash -- Malhotra -- Fritsche
Chimera -- Novotny -- Boll
Murray -- Peca -- Zherdev
Brule -- MacKenzie -- Lindstrom

Pairs:
Hejda -- Klesla
Hainsey -- Rome
OKT -- Russell

Norrena in net

According to Rob Kerr's Blog, Hale is back in the line-up as Anders has gone back to Calgary to be with his wife who is quite close to giving birth. Also looks like Moss has a good chance to draw in tonight because of the injury to Nystrom.

As per Peter Maher - Moss is in, Tanguay is out.

Pretty poor 1st period for the Flames. They didn't really seem to get into the game until late in the period. Hopefully we see a much better 40 minutes ahead.

This is the 2nd most boring game i've seen all year with the Flames. The 1st most boring game i've seen this year with the Flames is.. the last game vs. Columbus.

Columbus is the new Minnesota/NJ

Columbus does a pretty good job in outhitting, outskating and outshooting us.

The Flames haven't had any business being in this game from puck-drop, with the exception of Kiprusoff.

This road trip against four teams, who are out of the PO-ranks, has posed a huge opportunity to make a huge step towards the PO's, but we have just squandered it.

That about sums it up The Flames simply can't be losing these types of games at this point in the season, but they haven't been even really close to amounting much of anything significant offensively tonight at all....

*Sigh* Flames should have displayed that much emotion for the whole game.
