Do Junior A leagues have the same agreement that the NHL has with the CHL or could a player drafted out of Junior A go straight to the AHL?

Yes, but since the end-goal of the Junior A route is to secure an NCAA scholarship, they would have to forego said scholarship

Wait! He's a shorter, offensively talented defenseman?!?! Is he REALLY any better than any mediocre or awful shorter offensive defenseman EVAR?!?!?

I think he's better than some of them.

I believe players drafted out of Canadian Jr.A are still suspect to the same rules, ie they cannot go AHL until their 20yo year. I believe it was in Jost's thread that this was discussed. Next year would be Jost's 19yo season and for him, even though he went to and then left college, he is NHL or WHL next season.

Now Zemgus Girgensons on the other hand was drafted out of Jr.A in the US and was eligible to go straight to the AHL.

I don't get the high rankings.

1 - He's small. Being a defenseman, this is usually a massive knock against him.
2 - He a late birthday. Older than most in the draft.
3 - He's playing Jr. A hockey.

For comparison's sake, Samuel Girard put up more impressive numbers (relative to league) in his draft year and went #47.

geeze I didn't realize he is a late birthday and is older than other prospects for this draft.

Obviously scouts see something EXTREMELY special with him cause you can throw in a lot of different dmen drafted from this last 2016 NHL draft(other kids his age) and they would completely tear up Junior A too..... Like imagine Josh Mahura(3rd round Ducks) played Junior A this season? He is an unreal player and IMO would outscore Makar's point total. It would be disgusting the amount of points he would put up

The big test will be how he is next season. He is going from doing what he wants, when he wants in Junior A and never being pushed fully as of yet ever, to next year finally being pushed against better and older players. Could be a homerun of a pick or a flop of a pick

SORTA reminds me of Dante Fabbro's path too... he was one of the best dmen in Junior A as a 16 year old, then was easily a top dman as a 17 year old still playing Junior A and then was finally pushed once he made it to NCAA and was just pretty good... wasn't great like he has always been used to. Don't get me wrong I think Fabbro should become extremely good, but his first season in NCAA was definitely a learning curve.

Griffin Reinhart was picked 4th, maybe Makar should go number 1?

If you watched him play you might understand the high rankings, but it sounds like you just stat watch.

I didn't realize that UMass was the worst/second worst team in D1 this year. It's a bit surprising to not see him renege on his commitment given that situation. I'm not familiar with any precedent for that in terms of highly ranked college-bound players, but it's hardly uncommon across the rest of college sports.

What's the outcome for him if they start the season as atrociously as they finished (0-17)? Ends up in Medicine Hat or the AHL?

I had the same reaction upon seeing they won 2 games this season. At this point he may as well wait until he's drafted and see what his NHL team has to say about the situation and where they'd prefer him to play.

Makar won the CJHL MVP today, btw.

I predict Regina acquires his rights this offseason and he signs with NHL team that drafts him and hes sent to Regina for next season when they host Mem Cup.... Give it time, it will happen over next few months

That can't be right because Phoenix assigned Turris to the minors in his 19 year old season.

Makar could play in the AHL next year.

This is always the debate that nobody knows the forsure answer. Turris has been the only one that was able to for some reason(unsure if it was technically a conditioning assignment or what, cause i believe he was only down a couple weeks.. Could be wrong tho).. Everyone is still waiting on the right answer

Apparantly its the only offer he got. He wanted Boston College but recieved no offer from them.

That makes sense, but I'm more so wondering about whether teams stood pat after his WJAC performance and once he started climbing the rankings. I suppose a lot of them would have all of their D spots spoken for by that point in the year, but it's still hard to imagine that every good D1 program would let this kid pass them by.

There's no mystery at all. That rule only applies to kids drafted out of the CHL.

If that's actually true, he should happy to ditch them for the WHL if his NHL team asks.

A few people who follow College recruiting seem to think UMass could have a pretty decent team next season as they're putting a ton of assets into the recruiting aspect. Could be the next big Hockey school.

Well apparently Makar committed to UMass way back in the fall summer of 2015 when he was a nothing prospect so it's not overly surprising.

Wouldn't it be crazy if Regina got both Jost and Makar next year
