personally i will reserve judgement on what i think should be done until after the playoffs because there are so many factors to take into account.

everything depends on our perfomance in the playoffs. would jagr, straka, shanny choose to come back if we won the cup. i am not sure.

As someone who is admittedly not an expert on the NHL cap and its loopholes, would signing Shanny for next season at all allow a deference or amnesty regarding the bonus triggers he has from this year counting against next years cap?

That said, come on back Shanny, just know your role on this team will be (and should be) different.

I think he could be back for 1 more year. Get rid of Jagr, give Shanny the C. Put people out there who backcheck, block shots, and will do anything for an NHL shot.

Awesome that he wants to play another season..I just hope its not with us. Unless he wants to sit out until Jan and then join the team..i'd be ok with that.

Tired of watching him though be tanked by Feb each season and doing nothing out there.

agree. we can live without him getting PK time...although it does suck that Betts is out now.

Shanny should "retire" then re-sign with the team in January. That way we don't have him weighing us down most of the season but we use him for the playoffs

Shanahan has clearly lost a couple of steps, but he possesses the smarts to make up for it and is still a 20+ goal scorer in this league. Despite the hype surrounding Cherepanov and Anisimov, this organization is not exactly overflowing with surefire offensive talent.

If you're in the majority thats chanting "Re-sign Avery" at games and all but kicking Shanahan out the door, be careful what you wish for. Good babysitters are tough to find.

Bring shanny back at 2.5 for 1 year. Yes shanny is on the decline but he does help the team produce with intangibles like leadership and solid on the pk. I would prefer that shanny be an insurance policy for the times when players may struggle through a sophmore jinx ala callahan early in the season. I prefer to let the young guys develop instead of thrusting them into a do or die position.

It has been mentioned before that there is a lack of prospects to fill the top 6 positions via free agency. Even if the rangers went that route it more then likely would cost more for a player to fill shanahans scoring plus it would take a longer term contract that may have worse implications then 1 year of shanahan. Shanahan wasn't looking to screw the rangers this off season and wasn't in a hurry to resign with the team. He wanted to wait for the rangers to fill needed positions and he found a spot to fit in. I'm sure sather will try and find a spot for him and the money won't be a huge problem.

God bless you if you think this..shows why many of us aren't GM's. 44 points and sloppy, slow play is not worth $5 million.

Wasn't he making 4 million last year? From last year to this year he has had a 7 goal, 18 point dropoff, and he's making a million more?
