I'd pick a meaner Hamonic with a scoring touch

It's hard to think of a comparable, he's like a throwback that gets modern puck movement. I think Meloche has a lot of potential. I don't know if it will all develop but it's there.

I like that comparison.

Meloche won't make the opening night roster. He needs at least a year in the AHL, maybe 2. I'm actually pretty high on Meloche and always have been. He really embodies a lot of what I like. He has top pairing potential in my mind. I doubt he reaches #1 level as the offensive game isn't nearly that high and I don't think his skating is capable of 25+ minutes.

The Manson comparison is pretty good. Meloche is a lot meaner, but that may not translate into the NHL. Similar styles of games though.

Today is draft day in the Q...1OA pick is Alexis Lafreniere. 15 yo kid is going places, already called a prodigy and compared to Lecavalier and Crosby at the same age, kid had 83 pts in 36 games last year, which places him 4th all time behind Mario Lemieux, Pierre Turgeon and Alexandre Daigle in league's history. That's huge considering the other players are from a different scoring era. You might be looking at the next McDavid right here.

Pretty impressive resume already. 15-17 are huge years for development, hope it all comes together for him.

He's a late birthday so will be 2020 draft. Could be NHL ready then. Several very high end players drafted in Q today. Will be interesting to watch them.

Does Clurman participating in this camp mean he's playing there next year?

I'm cool with it. Would be easier to follow him in the NCAA; but I'm on board with the slow burn path for Clurman. After Zads & Bigras / Meloche, he easily has the highest ceiling in our defensive prospect pool. So let him take his time and let's see if he can't get there some day.

There's zero pressure on Clurman right now thanks to his draft position. I think he could benefit from going to the USHL too, just because he's so young.

Or he could just skip college and then go to the AHL.

Maybe. I'm sure the Avs have been able to watch him way more closely than any of us have to see if he's ready for that. My gut says he's not ready for that step, but that's not based on anything concrete.

Tri-City wants him there badly, but nothing is guaranteed. IMO it would be the absolute best thing for his development.

What's the other alternative for him? Going straight to college? I'd rather want him in the USHL getting a good amount of playing time.

He just turned 19 years old. Starting college development at 20 isn't exactly ideal.

Notre Dame is a really good program for him to be in. Like I said, he has no pressure to jump right in and be a top defenseman next year, getting limited minutes there may not be the worst thing. The USHL may get him more playing time faster, but I think the only pressure on him to do so is coming from fans.

I haven't seen him play myself, so I can't really say what kind of hockey he's ready for, but I think we may be investing way too much in him right now.

College is the other route, but I don't think it is best for him. He is RAW. At Notre Dame he will shuffle between bottom pairing and scratch next year.

Lots of players start at 20-21.

He's raw because he's developing at lower levels compared to his peers. There's no obvious reason why he's on the slow path either (size, skating issues, no mass, etc).

Reading the game and pacing. He has never had to play as a Junior A pace, let alone a college pace. He will be incredibly overmatched if he heads straight to college, and next year will be a season where he gets ~10-20 games and very limited minutes. He'd be fine in the long-term as he get trusted in his sophomore season, but next year would just be a lost season.

He didn't have the best point statistic wise.

2015-16: GP[48] G[9] A[34] P[43]
2016-17: GP[36] G[8] A[24] P[32]

Granted he missed 12 games where he would have definitely surpassed his goal total, I was expecting more of a high 50 to low 60 point season which didn't happen. This doesn't mean he will bust, maybe his team lost a lot of good players to college and USHL and it was a younger overall team. However, I do agree with others that he might want to consider taking a year off of Notre Dame and go to the USHL for next season. He is quite raw.

In my extremely biased (as a ND fan), & highly inexpert opinion, I think he should go play for Randy Jackson.

Anyone who's seen them closely able to answer this.....what's the advantage of taking Makar instead of Heiskanen if both are available? From what I understand, Heiskanen has the safer game while still having mobility and also plays in a safer league whereas with Makar, there's a huge risk that he has a drop-off against better opposition.

Is his high rating because his raw talent level is just higher than Heiskanen or something?
