Except that nobody actually wanted Greece to win. It's like non-Flyers fans seeing the Flyers win the Cup but probably worse

Wut? A team whose gameplan was "kick the ball down the field at random and hope it bounces off Koller's head into the net"?

You and I must have watched different tournaments. Pavel Nedvěd, (prime) Tomáš Rosický and Karel Poborský – that alone is more talent in one place than the entire Greek roster had overall. Actually, I could have stopped right after Nedvěd.

So goofing around with FHM3 I ran a sim from 1931-2043ish and here are the players that the sim says are possibly the "GOAT" looking at their hardware. The clear top 2 in this would be Gretzky and Howe but after that it's pretty open as to who should be #3

Wayne Gretzky
14x Hart Trophy Winner
2x Cup Champion
2x Conn Smyth Winner
1x Calder Trophy Winner
10x Rocket Richard Winner
14x Art Ross Trophy Winner

Connor McDavid
7x Hart Trophy Winner
2x Cup Champion
2x Conn Smythe Winner
4x Rocket Richard Winner
5x Art Ross Winner

Joe Sakic
3x Hart Trophy Winner
4x Cup Champion
6x Conn Smythe Winner
3x Rocket Richard Winner
5x Art Ross Trophy Winner

Stan Mikita
8x Hart Trophy Winner
2x Cup Champion
1x Conn Smythe Winner
3x Rocket Richard Winner
4x Art Ross Winner

Gordie Howe (Yes he had two halves of a career one at wing and one on D)
8x Hart Trophy Winner
3x Conn Smythe Winner
4x Cup Champion
7x Norris Trophy Winner
2x Rocket Richard Winner
3x Art Ross Winner

Syl Apps
5x Hart Trophy Winner
2x Conn Smythe Winner
4x Cup Champion
3x Rocket Richard Winner
3x Art Ross Winner

Paul Coffey
2x Cup Champion
10x Norris Trophy Winner

The weirdest thing that happened is the dominance of Ross Lonsberry, he stars with the Habs in the 80s and wins an Art Ross and three Rocket Richards. He additionally posts the highest single season total until Gretzky of 184 Points.

In the SIM this time Lemieux got screwed over by Gretzky's longevity and then Joe Sakic emerged as the "Next One" leaving Mario with only a Hart and a Conn Smythe. Crosby and Ovechkin both retired with a trophy or two a piece they got screwed over by Jagr, Richards and Spezza being all time greats instead of merely good. If there was an easier way to export the data it could be a fun exercise in ranking players without the already existing biases.

Absolutely expected. That's why I drafted him in last year's MLD.

Well, I have a very low opinion of the misspelled Bear. Or Czech 'football' in general.

Greece definitely had less stars and significantly weaker roster on paper... but the gap between Czechia and say Portugal or France was much worse.

I don't think many Devils fans will disagree with that tweet. The team sucks.

If you asked me who finished 2nd in point totals for defensemen last season, I never would have guessed Victor Hedman.

I find the choices that Vegas made in the expansion draft rather... odd. To put it mildly.

A few of you guys have participated in this last year and the year before. Those of you who haven't, please give it a look: Best NHL Players 2016-2017 Voting.

I get why they did what they did, honestly it makes more sense to hoard picks from seem teams and pick a few decent players. Especially with Fleury they won't be the worst

Eh, sure, but is a 5th round pick better than Stempniak? They got some good deals with 1st/2nd rounders, but I wouldn't take 4th+ picks as incentive to draft vastly inferior player.

unlesss........ you want the inferior player. because you don't expect/want to be competitive next season.

How many times out of 30 did Vegas end up with the best/most established player they could have taken? 5? There's a reason for this. They're in tank nation. When your best 3 on D are Methot, Emelin and Garrison you are looking for a 1st overall pick.

I can't say it's a bad strategy.

5 is low. The way I see it is:

Definitely the best player available (11):
Miller, Eakin, Marchessault, McNab, Emelin, Neal, Methot, Fleury, Schlemko, Perron, Schmidt

Established, meh (4):
Van Riemsdyk, Pickard, Garrison, Sbisa

Best player available, not established (2):
Pulkkinen, Leipsic

Definitely not the best player available (9):
Stoner, Carrier, Engelland, Brickley, Karlsson, Nosek, Berube, Haula, Thorburn

Debatable (4):
Reinhart, Merrill, Lindberg, Bellemare

Also, I would disagree that rebuilding/building teams are best served by a bare cupboard. They have to get rid of at least a dozen guys by training camp anyway - why not pick up more nice bells and whistles to shop around?

3 firsts this year and a top 5 pick next year will be a good start for their prospect pipeline

I think it's pretty fair to say that Vegas is in a good position to be very competitive very quickly. It's not automatic though, obviously - they still have to use all those draft picks intelligently.
