I swear every time I see Mike Smith in the highlights he's letting in a terrible goal or having a meltdown.

Agreed, he can be a great goalie once every 15 games or so. But other than that he seems like a massive hot head/head case. Not what a young team needs IMO. They need a head strong goalie to install confidence in the rest of the team. With Smith you are worried about a softy from the blueline for which hell lose his **** after

He has his merits and honestly I don't think Calgary wanted to give up more for MAF or Bishop. I would assume he's a stopgap for one of their younger goalies but I don't think he's a solution for them.

Risky play still tho and could cost them the playoffs.

As far as the stop gap things goes, Smith has what 2 years left? Both till he's a UfA and as a starter. Most of their goalies in the pipeline are min 2 years away from sniffing the nhl. So by the time they are ready to see nhl ice, Smith will be gone and won't be able to provide that shelter.

Take Brossoit for example, he's 6 years post draft, posted some good AHL numbers and now just entering back up stage. Talbot can legit provide shelter. But for their goalies, they are still very raw

Darling would have been a tremendous option. Not only does he have potential to break out Ala Talbot. He's at right age where hell be there for 4/5 years and able to shelter younger goalies

Smith did post decent numbers this season as far as saves on HDSC and saves above expected.

I think it's hilarious that they lost out on Bishop and Darling though.

Lots of Flames fans are saying that Hamilton's acquisition is much better than us getting Talbot and that we'd be fools not to take Hamilton for Talbot if that trade was ever offered. Talbot is one of the best goalies in the league and it's a key position so I don't understand that position.

These are the same Flames that say their water is wetter than ours. I wouldn't pay much attention to them.

Got to think those Flames fans are few and far between. Pretty sure they trade half their roster for Talbot with how much they have unanimously harped on how ALL their troubles are because of goaltending.

Yeah I bet they couldn't have used Talbot in the playoffs...

All these superior players on the Flames roster and they still got waxed by Edmonton last season. Lol.

There isn't a player in that organization the Oilers would trade Talbot for.

Flames really should've taken a flyer on Darling rather than Bubbles McFumbles. His stats against the Oilers are excellent but that doesn't mean all that much since most goalies (Sans Price) have good stats against them.

I saw the chatter, and it was Talbot for Hamilton + Smith. Would be an interesting move.

The answer would still be an easy no.

Interesting in the sense that it was offered.

Not interesting in the sense that the Oilers would take or even think on it.

Would you trade Talbot for any two Flamers?

I think that's a good question.

No, but not because of value. The Oilers have more need of their star goaltender than they do Calgary's best players.

Hamilton and Gaudreau pretty easily. Im just glad Edmonton found Talbot, hes a rare exception to finding elite goalies for cheap. Calgary will continue to look forever.

But Hamilton trade was great no doubt. Still jealous he was gifted to them.

I'm a pretty big Hamilton fan and know they got him for a steal but... Talbot, outside of his first few months in Edmonton, is a top 10 NHL 65+ games a season starter... and that's downplaying it.

I can't even say I'm a huge Talbot fan but after so many years with average at best goaltending... Hamilton really doesn't compare.

Gaudreau is a great but small one dimensional winger who doesn't play well on the road...

Calgary can keep both IMO.

Not without finding a goalie of Talbot's calibre beforehand.

Two of them? Hell yes.
Getting Oliver Karlsson 2.0 Kylington and Sam Gilmour 2.0 Bennett would be a steal!

Speaking on the Flames, where has this narrative that Tkachuk is elite defensively developed from?

Admittedly Frolik and Backlund are (for my money) the 2nd best defensive forward duo in the NHL after Marchand and Bergeron. But no one's ever come out saying Pastrnak is a defensive dynamo (or Seguin before him) because his possession numbers get propped up in the same way.
