McD VS OEL
OEL is 3 years younger better offensively, and arguably just as good defensively. cap hit is 800k more for OEL

MacKinnon VS Stepan
Stepan is 6 years older and his cap hit is 200k more. MacKinnon has the higher upside, Stepan is the more consistent producer.

That woudl be a grand slam of epic proportions to make those 2 trades.

even if a 1st or 2 were included in those deals, they would be killer.

can you imagine...

Kreider - Zib - Buch
Nash - Mackinnon - MZA
Miller - Hayes - Grabner (Hate this line fyi)
Vesey - Lindberg - Fasth

OEL - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal, Holden, Pionk, Beregazlov (sp?), Graves, etc fighting to the 3rd pair.

Henrik
Some backup goalie

play the top 2 defensive pairs 50 mins a night, 3rd pair gets a very sheltered 10-15 mins...more during blowouts...

offense is young, fast, and has tons of upside. defense is 50 bajillion times better (if not 100 bajillion).

I doubt we will unless Step writes a book (unlikely).

I will give you guys some "inside baseball" information.

I kind of know somebody that works for MSG (not the Rangers). Over the years it was rumored that Brooks had two sources but these sources were actual players. I will not name them here because it is just rumors. Neither player has been on the team in a while. If you are curious PM me.

I would estimate it to be a dillion times better, without doing the math.

I want to see Stepan do a Boyle-esque interview

You are right that Carp was the main person that brought it up back when he had a column/blog. There was somebody else that mentioned it but I do not remember who it was. Carp almost mentioned he came close to having a fight with Brooks back in the day.

I'd love to get MacK out of Colorado but absolutely not at the expense of changing McD into Barrie.

I was looking at the forwards and there isn't much in the way of of long-term assets. Neal, Plekanec, Ward, Lehtera are guys I'd probably snag with the first 3 being UFA's at years end. Trade them for picks/futures when possible during the season.

I think he can pout together a nice young bottom-6 though if he selects Lindberg/Fast, Paquette/JT Brown, Calvert/Karlsson, McGinn/Burmistrov, Deslauriers, Brouwer, Nordstrom, Burrows

But apparently we are getting OEL for Stepan

OEL-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Barrie-Bereglazov (Call that pair Barry-Glazov)

If we're going for Shattenkirk then we should go 7 years and front load it, will take the AAV down and it gives us 2 outs if he drops off, first the new CBA and later in the final 2 years his buyout will be very manageable if we front load it as much as possible. That's definitely how i'd deal with the Shattenkirk contract atleast.

Brooks "logic" of higher AAV with less term seems pretty dumb given how we're setup with now, we need the lower AAV.

I think if they take Vatanen and Eakin, then could then flip them to Edmonton for RNH and Eberle. Then they could ice a top-six of:

Neal - Shipachyov - Radulov
Perron - RHN - Eberle

Pretty solid. Perhaps even more so if they can get Dadanov to join his instead of taking Perron. Having guys on expiring deals would help them retain younger players and be active in free agency the following year.

It's been a long time since I ran the numbers, but I believe the buy-out cap hit is higher for front-loaded contracts.

Are you refering to when Stepan injured his leg in training camp? It wasn't a big altercation BUT you can tell stepan was getting aggravated in the way Brooks was asking questions.

No that wasn't it, but that "Well, Larry" was pretty classic.

Hmm, you just made med uncertain, i'll check it out, i think i'm right though.

Edit: It's signing bonuses who make contracts "buyout proof", so give him real salary atleast. I'll google some more.

If I remember correctly it was in the middle of the 2015-16 season. Some time after January I believe. I think it took place in the locker room corridor. All second hand information I'm trying to remember from Carp's blog so do not take it as gospel.

That would be a pretty nice top-6 to start with. Especially considering the age of that group as a whole.

You guys are mad at Brooks because the Rangers don't share your enthusiasm for Shattenkirk. You haven't really heard much about Shattenkirk and the Rangers since the end of the season. It's a huge commitment.

Yeah. I think the signing bonuses are paid out regardless of the buy-out, but might still be part of the cap-hit calculation

At this point I hope that if Stepan is traded, he goes somewhere else other than Arizona.

Their fans are ridiculous
