Yeah.
I think they will end up taking him, I just hope Vegas realizes this situation and get's a little extra. They should also be doing the same to us with Schmidt vs Grubauer, there values are similar but we really need Vegas to not take Schmidt.

It will come down to:
Mrazek (vs Helm/Sheahan)
Raanta (vs Grabner)
Pickard (vs Grigorenko)
Ullmark (vs Bogosian)
Fleury (vs Rust)
Grubauer (vs Schmidt)

As these teams don't offer good alternative choices to the same degree that Pittsburgh and Washington do. They should only consider Fleury/Grubauer if they get a little extra.

Oh I totally agree...those are the four I have in the mock above.

GMGM is going to make a killing on getting teams to deal under the table on taking who they want them to take. If this was just taking straight talent while factoring in contracts and age...pretty straight forward. But its a total dance at this point.

Have a question.
Caps playd the last 5 games with 7 defencemen, but if they had playd with 6 defencemen and annouce Schmidt as a forward could they then have protect him as a forward ?

They could have protected him whatever position he played. The Isles protect 5 D and 3 forwards, 1 goalie.

Schmidt is designated as a defenseman officially by the NHL central office so that's the position he'd have to be protected as. Can't do any shenanigans and try to protect him as a forward.

Where are all the deals

#hardball #kickingtires #George #kingfor3days

I did hear a rangers fan saying they offered to retire #37 if they didn't take someone. And also see Vegas is facing a solid heatwave soon 117F, which may make some cold weather boys hesitant to sign there.

@SunGarrioch: There was talk there were eight side deals in place yesterday and the #Sens weren't one of them.

Four teams have often been mentioned (ANA, CHI, CBJ, NYI) but I wonder who the other half are? Again, I wouldn't put it past MacLellan throwing a pick McPhee's way to select the player in Grubauer that Vegas would prefer anyway. Anything to maximize next year's chances since Schmidt would be the tougher player to replace (but likely not the more valuable asset).

Maybe GMBM is throwing some assets to Vegas to entice them to take Grubauer + Orpik.

Nah, they'll just be a younger version of the "snowbirds", go south for the winter and return north for the summer. Come to think of it, rather than go with the name Knights, LV should have gone with snowbirds and the logo could have been an RV with the left tail light always blinking.

@reporterchris: Vegas is still talking to a couple teams about trades related to the expansion draft.

@reporterchris: George McPhee says he has "at least" six trades completed.

Tampa Bay is reportedly one of the others.

I thought McPhee established a deadline of Midnight last night to complete trades. Guess it was more of a soft deadline.

I could very well get onboard with giving up assets for them to take Orpik. Less so for them to take Grubauer over Schmidt.

Goalie, Defense and scoring from the wings.

He still hasn't learned.

I would love it if GMBM can swing an Orpik pick.

Hope he gets 8 1st this year. The Golden Knights "Hard 8" has a nice marketing ring.

What's the record for first round picks by one team in a year?

Three in 2004 (Ovechkin, Schultz, Green).
Also Three in 2002 (Eminger, Semin, Gordon).
Two in each of 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2012.

If Vrana does not have to pass through waivers next season in order to move back and forth to the AHL, he should be an attractive piece for GMGM and the Vegas AHL affiliate. Work a deal where they take Orpik in the expansion draft and they'll receive Vrana for doing so. That'll push the team's current cap space up to close to 30 mil which should address the RFAs and Oshie and perhaps even Justin Williams.

In no way is shedding Orpik worth losing Vrana.

Shedding Orpik now not only helps immediately but it helps next season when it comes time to resign Carlson.

There's no guarantee they resign Carlson, with or without Orpik's contract on the books. And even though I also want to see Orpik's contract off the books, it's in no way worth it to lose Vrana in order to make it happen. Vrana is the only dynamic offensive talent in the pipeline and the Caps have no 1st round pick this year in which they could hope to replace him. Letting go of Vrana is a huge overpayment.
