For your claim to be true (the most likely), Washington wouldn't have to win ALL THREE games. It's a big stretch to say most likely and base it on a perfect record.

If Washington loses just ONE game in regulation, it takes only ONE victory by Boston or Philly or Ottawa (an OT or SO loss in their case) or New York for one of those teams to be sure to finish ahead of Washington.

Now that's just for the 8th spot... for the 7th spot, the Caps would have to be perfect and two of those four teams would have to lose twice.

That's a long way from being most likely.
Fair enough, but my point was they need to beat two teams that are mathematically eliminated, which is "the most likely outcome" of those games. And the counter arguments about the division rely on them beating Carolina.

Anyway, you're right, it's all a crapshoot, but I think it more likely Washington make the playoffs as a 7-8 seed than as a 3 seed. Which means, there is a semi-decent chance we play them, should they make it.

While not at the expense of the Habs, of course, I hope Washington does awesome this playoffs (assuming they can squeek in still). I don't expect it, but it would rock. Go Caps!

This is a non-issue. The Caps won't make it.

I'm much more afraid of the Rangers finishing 7th....

Or Washington finishing 3rd and Carolina ending up in 7th...

My order of preference...:

Boston > Philly > Washington > Carolina > Ottawa > New York

Indeed, Washington is BAD news. Ill be happy ANY way we go out. first round? second round? doesnt matter. The ONLY thing that would really upset me in the next few weeks would be to go up agains Huet in the first (or any other) round. I think it would be desastrous. Not that Huet has a personal vendeta or anything but I know he would love to BURN his ex team so soon after being traded. allthough looking at the rankings right now I really dont think its likely they will finish 8th. they will finish 3rd if anything. so first round is not likely. Thank god!

Thats true for washington, as is Briere with Philly and proving philly is the better team, as is Boston beating the habs after a season sweep...

The only team I would hate losing against in the 1st round is Boston. The others I don't really care about losing against them, but I'd be a little disapointed after this great year. But Boston we just can't lose.

Montreal knows the trick to fool Huet, just try something that will likely not work and it will. If you try something that is likely to work, it won't. Mr bad goals is good, but not enough to haunt the Habs.

Alright let's speculate a little bit:

1 pens beat 8 philly
2 Habs beat 7 boston
3 caps beat 6 Sens
4 NJ beat 5 rangers

2nd round :
Pens vs NJ
Habs vs Caps

3rd round :
Pens(tired team after facing physical teams) vs Habs

Habs to the cup finals against Detroit who just lost Lidstrom for the rest of the playoffs because of a Anaheim cheap shot.

Who do you want to face in the first round?

Simple poll...being that there are 5 teams that we could possibly play who do you want us to face?

In order of preference: Philadelphia, Boston, or Washington. I wouldn't be very optimistic against Ottawa or Carolina.

Order of preference for me:

1) Boston: best matchup for us. Would have massive confidence for that one
2) Philadelphia: similar. My only concern is the physical aspect, although I think the mainstream media tends to overrate the Flyers physical nature
3) Carolina: We've played them better this year, but haven't played them for a while. They have played solid down the stretch. No Rod the Bod makes this matchup more favourable than in 2006.
4) Ottawa: fragile confidence, but still have firepower
5) Washington: hottest team in the league. Ovechkin alone can sink a team.

Ottawa showed that firepower tonight and it really isn't something to take lightly.

I still feel sorta torn, on one hand a conference title would be SHWEET, on the other hand not that I would mind going up against OV but a Pitts vs. Wash matchup has me salivating already!

Ovechkin vs Crosby/Malkin would be a dream matchup.

Looking at the bracket nothing is set in stone so, maybe I should hope for both a conference title AND a Pitts/Was matchup!

We can beat anybody and will. We will lose to the wings or ducks. Or maybe not.

Well I chose Boston because they

A) Only have one player with over 20 goals (Kobasew is hurt)
B) Savard's back is hurt and this would be his first playoff
C) Slow team that can't handle the Habs speed
D) Thomas is a question mark

Do you guys realize that any of those match-ups would be exciting?

Boston: History of the 2 teams. Habs 8-0 in regular season
Carolina: Revenge
Ottawa: 2 Canadian teams, rivalry is about to begin
Washington: Huet + AO
Philly: Briiiiiiiiiiiiiiiièèèèèèèèèèèèèèrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeee eeeee

If the Eastern Conferences finishes up the way it stands today...be perfect....Montreal vs. Boston...love it...Pitt vs. Wash. what a series. NJD vs. Rangers...one has to go...Ott vs. Canes...Cans can take out Ottawa.
