'01-'05 drafts, 19 players and counting

With Matt D'Agostini making his debut tonight (assuming it's not changed from now to game time), he will become the 18th drafted prospect from the '01-05 drafts to play at least 1 game and if Greg Stewart gets in a game he'll become the 19th player from the 5 drafts to see action from the last 3 years. There's also Cote and Danis who played in the nhl as undrafted prospects.

'01-4 Komisarek/Perezhogin/Pleks/Milroy
'02-2 Higgins/Ferland
'03-5 Kostitsyn/O'Byrne/Lappy/Locke/Halak
'04-4 Chipchura/Grabo/Streit/Stewart
'05-4 Price/Lats/D'Ago/S.Kostitsyn

that's some nice work from Savard/Timmins and their scouting staff!

Should be interesting to see how the '06 and '07 drafts compare, since every year but the '02 draft (where we had only 6 picks) has seen at least 4 players play at least one game (assuming Stewart gets in on saturday) With Pacioretty not far away he could be the first from the '06-'07 group to see nhl ice, but he certainly won't be the only one.

A quick count for Pittsburgh would be 14 from 01 to 05, with 4 of them being top 5 picks

I see the year 2012/13 having a team of all draft picks sorta like this:
S Kost - Pleks - A Kost
Max Pac - Maxwell - Lats
Higgins - Chips - Wyman
Stewart - Laps - White
Conboy - Fortier - D'Ago

Markov - Komi
McDo - Carle
Emelin - O'B
Tank - Fischer

Price
?

5 lines & 4 pairings all home grown & not counting drafts between now & then with players that will beat out some of our current prospects.

Not bad, imo.

As much as building from whit in is nice, I wouldn't be happy to see that line up by 2012... I hope we will trade some prospects (that won't find spots on the team anyway) for a proven impact player at some point.

Assuming we don't find one between now & then in the draft, I don't disagree, but, for home grown it still looks like work well done by the scouting staff.

Yeah it's quite a bit different when you're drafting Crosby (1st), Malkin (2nd), Whitney (5th), Fleury (1st), Staal (2nd) than
Komi (7th), Kostitsyn (10th), Chipchura (18th), Higgins (14th), Price (5th).

Pittsburgh only has Talbot, Christensen, Kennedy, Letang who played any meaningful minutes as a lower than 1st round pick from 2001-present. That's pretty average really, below average actually (well they did draft Esposito after all ). Pittsburgh is only top five picks and free agents.

They are a team who is really top heavy and could use the great depth that we have. They are going to struggle down the road since they won't be getting anymore top 5 picks and won't have any money once they sign Malkin, Crosby, Whitney long-term.

Whereas we have S Kost, Lapierre, O'Byrne, Pleks, Grabs, Lats, Streit, Halak, Chipchura (not including Markov, Bouillon, Ryder as great low rounders).

No one in the league is close to us really.

Cote was drafted by Toronto in 2000.

But you're right. The Habs' amateur scouts have been second-to-none the last few years.

Cudos to the developmental work of our GM and his Personel are also warranted

Yea thanks, meant FA signed players. Great job by Timmins and his staff to get so many drafted players into the nhl. Since Timmins came on board officially for the '03 draft, there have been 13 of his picks to play a game for the Habs from his first 3 drafts.

Why not add in 2000 for every year from this generation?

Hainsey, Hossa, and Balej all seen NHL action as well. Hainsey and Hossa both with over 150 games.

That's 22 players in the new century/decade.

Not to mention the few players who are easily NHL calibre but haven't crossed seas.

(Korneev, Emelin)

Because '01 is when Savard came on board and turned around the farm system. As for Korneev and Emelin, I'll count them when they play a game in the nhl.
