OT: NBA reduces timeouts (to improve flow/shorten game) and moves TDL to before ASG

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ine/472759001/

Quote:
The maximum number of timeouts per game has been reduced from 18 to 14 and teams can now call just two timeouts instead of three in the final three minutes of regulation. Also, teams now have just two timeouts to use per overtime session instead of three.
...
The league also moved the trade deadline to the Thursday 10 days before the All-Star Game. For the 2017-18 season, the trade deadline is Feb. 8.

Let's see how that works out for shortening game.

And now GMs won't be able to finalize deals at ASG. Throws a wrench in some teams plans.

That may be one of the earliest trade deadlines of the major sports.

BLAME the Demarcus Cousins issue going from Sacramento to New Orleans as the main impetus for the deadline being moved up, LS.

I don't think NBA has a game length problem, they have a late game pacing problem.

The last 3-5 minutes of any close NBA game usually takes about 30 real minutes to play out. Between the constant time outs, and fouling back and forth there is very little actual basketball happening.

An NBA game is usually shorter than an NHL game (includes timeouts, halftime/intermissions). You'll see a lot of 7:30 NBA games end before 10:00. The final buzzer in an NHL game usually comes around 10:10.

As others have stated:

NBA games drag in the final 5 minutes not in the first 3 quarters. I don't see how this changes that much. That's way to early for the trade deadline and will make deals harder to make due to remaining $ left at that point in the season.

I don't get it.

From my experience NBA games usually are pretty fast paced but yeah the last few minutes do drag on, this seems like a good move IMO.
