Gelinas couldn't make it as part of Colorado's uber weak defensive corps.
I don't know what happened to this guy, he looked really promising at one point in Jersey.

29 points in 60 games in 13/14 and then he got worse and worse...

Looking at his games played numbers over the years seems like he was injured quite often.

If it wasn't for us having Martinsen I would look at Chiasson. Inconsistent but can score 10.

I would definitely sign Butcher. He has a real opportunity in Montreal as a LD too.

Brian Dumoulin would be a guy I'd be interested in. Pens may walk away if he gets the money he's looking for.

Interesting about Butcher although it might appear that Colorado values him more now.

Quote:
The Colorado Avalanche selected defenseman Will Butcher 123rd overall in the 2013 draft. The Avalanche and Butcher have until August 15, 2017, to reach a contractual agreement. After that, Will becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Quote:
Last summer the Colorado Avalanche were looking at a different mold of player. They wanted big, gritty, speedy players with lots of leadership and skill.

Will Butcher is scouted as being a smart two-way defenseman¯ whose main talents lie in the offensive zone.¯ While he certainly displays leadership abilities, being part of the captaincy structure since his first season at DU, he s not known for being gritty. And he s small 5-foot-10, 190 pounds. Therefore, he didn t fit most of the points in the old Avalanche mold.

That mold has changed, though. Judging by acquisitions from the draft on, speed and skill are still prized, and leadership is always a coveted quality. However, the team seems to prefer small, smart players now.

Will Butcher fits that mold a lot more accurately. Therefore, it makes sense the Colorado Avalanche might be considering him now after eschewing him last year.
The above info was from 3 months ago. The fact that he still isn't signed, despite how much the Avs apparently value him now, makes for an interesting outcome. Hopefully, Butcher holds a grudge and hits the open market.

Butcher will have a ton of interest, but I doubt he'd be interested in coming to Canada.

Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't sign. I mean right now the Avs are a big joke around the league, if you have a chance to leave you get the hell out!!!

His name was mentioned already but didn't he resign in the KHL not so long ago?

That article is probably just a click bait because he indeed signed an extension with Metallurg Magnitogorsk and is under contract till 30.04.2018.

Scanning the list of unsigned NHL ufas under 30, didn't find many

Jimmy Hayes RW 27
Cody Franson D 29
Alex Chiasson RW 26
Ryan White RW 29
Dwight King LW 27
Brandon Pirri LW 26
Joseph Cramarossa LW 24

Must be someone will give Franson a shot.

Surprised that White and Chiasson are still out there. They didn't have bad years.

Definitely. Dumoulin was stellar in the playoffs. Skates well, plays smart.

But they have the cap room to fit both Sheary and Dumoulin I'd think. And their team is pretty much set after that.

so bad defensively, but good enough offensively (well, good shot...) that he was tried as 4th-liner at one point just so he could be kept on the PP.

If I were to guess, he ends up in Europe for a few years, puts up big points and returns to the league with a team looking to get a spark and try to find a "gem".
