This was the plan all along according to the original rumor. I believe the idea is that he's going to a less physically demanding league both on and off ice. He probably felt like he wouldn't make it through another NHL season with his bad back. So does he try to play one more partial season in the NHL or go for another 2, 3 or more in a "softer" league?

Pay should still be decent, I'm sure that in his physical condition he probably isn't thinking Olympics, but it would be nice to see him on that team. If nothing else, he'll get a great opportunity to see more of the world and expose his family to European culture.

I guess he had to "retire" because mutual contract termination requires waivers?

Well the Preds WILL have two openings in 3rd pairing...

Edit: Also, Switzerland is a wonderful place to work on cardio. elevation ranges from 3000 ft to 12000 ft. Most of the arenas are in low lands but still tons of hiking trails in the Alps for cardio. Also high standard of living, light schedule and chance for Team Canada.
