Nobody on the flames I would trade Nylander for in a 1 for 1 trade.

Quite a special 4th liner !!!

Except for two short spans (18 seconds and 2 seconds), he played with Matthews the whole night during the opening game, mostly with Hyman and a few times with Komarov.

Play by play of that opening game:

Well false, but okay.

Marner and Gaudreau will be a complete wash in a couple years. So I really don't know what kind of Koolaid you're being served in T.O. to think that Marner is better.

I can see Marner becoming the better player than Gaudreau in 5 years, but as of right now it's not even close imo. Gaudreau is on another tier.

Tremendous pissing match thread. Just awesome amounts of lunacy on both sides...Nylander a "dime a dozen player", Leafs fans calling out Flames fans for playoff victories....really just a fantastic job all around. Well done everyone!

...but I think the point is that the Leafs aren't trading any of the so-called "Big 3".

And I can't blame them.

another tier is a bit much but I agree Gaudreau is better now. I mean in Marners 1st season at age 19 he scored the same # of points (61) marner played 5 more games of course.

So I don't think it will be 5 years, but even in 5 years Marner will be the age Gaudreau is now and be the better player so why would we trade for gaudreau then? which is where other posters were going with the comparison

The Leafs need a Dman, who is steady in his own end, and can move the puck to their forwards on clear breakouts. I would NEVER trade Matthews. But I would consider Nylander for that steady Dman. Really surprised the Leafs weren't in on Hamonic? He kind of checks all the boxes of need.

In all fairness Alex Nylander was 18 playing in the AHL, not many can succeed in the AHL at that age who aren't the 1st overall pick. Dude will light it up this year

it came down to the leafs and flames for harmonic JVR wouldn't waive his NTC or sign an extension.

Nylander doesn't get traded for a dman he gets traded for a #1 dman similar age which other teams wouldn't do so therefore he wont be traded

From certain posters, yes. However, there is some discussion going on. How about we keep that going.

Flames fans need to recognize that none of their much more expensive, flawed top players are worth one of the Leafs 3 elite ELC players.

Tkachuk has tremendous value.

I don't know if JVR has that kind of value? To get a young number one Dman appears to cost a young number one centre: Jones for Johanson. I see Nylander's value returning an established top four Dman, who is really good in his own end. To me Nylander = more than Brodie, but less than Hamilton. I don't see the Flames as wanting/needing Nylander though. Maybe Colorado for E. Johnson?

Though I think Nylander is gonna be a great player for the leafs, but we need our defense in tact more. The flames should be expecting progression from their young forwards such as Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan, Ferland, and Tkachuk. Treliving should wait to seee some of the season play out before making a big push for a top line RW if needed.

well you are likely right because the flames ended up with Hamonic.

There is 0 reason for the leafs to trade Nylander for a top4 D we have 3 of them right now (Rielly, Zaitsev and Gardiner) with Dermott certainly trending into a top4 D pretty soon and Liljegren a couple years away why would we move a elite forward for a garden variety top4 D? You can pump up Brodie how ever you like but he isn't enough of an upgrade on rielly to warrant moving from our elite forward depth

Trying to argue with Leafs fans about player value is like sinking in quick sand. There is just no way to win.

Not a chance I would think Brodie = Nylander. I think Nylander is worth a guy like former first overall E. Johnson. An established top four guy, who is excellent in his own end. He would be the perfect partner for Reilly. The Oilers gave up a proven first line scoring winger for Larsen. Top quality defensive d are worth a lot.
