Nashville gets the 9th overall pick, which would have been ours...
Thanks! So far the trade has worked out as Vokoun for Nick Spaling, the 9th overall pick this year, and the 31st pick this year.
Now that this is over, I can finally root for Tomas again. I hated him whenever he won this season...I was hoping for Stamkos to fall into our laps, but Tomas simply is too good a goalie for that to happen.
It really depends on what goalie we acquired. If we went back with Auld, then yes we would have been battling Tampa.
Clearly that would have been a disaster, no GM is dumb enough to do that heh. Not that he didn't deserve a 2nd chance, just not on this team.
Still, it means we actually finished a place worse than last year as we had the #10 for Ellerby. Oh well. It's very true that while the #9 pick is nice, you can't overrate the necessity of Vokoun. He was simply the best goalie on the market and there was little to choose from after him.
Toskala is a good goalie but who can really tell right now, Toronto made him look awful with that defense. Fernandez couldn't muster anything great before he got injured. Bryzgalov was about the only one who had some success and even then Vokoun is certainly better and has the experience of already being a reliable #1 goalie.
Anytime you can get a #1 goalie without losing roster players you've done a pretty darn good job. Plus the 2nd rounders we gave up weren't ours. Pretty funny, we gave them the first and last picks of the 2nd round.
