Doubt it. Roy won't settle for anything less than full control this time around, and there's no way ownership will simply about-face and hand him the keys to the kingdom. Again.

I'm tellin' ya, he's waiting for Quebec Nordiques 2.0 to happen and when it does...

Then again, the way Bergevin is going maybe he'll get an even bigger prize.

So the Flames are not pursuing a new arena anymore (allegedly). They basically wanted the same deal that Daryl Katz got out of Edmonton, where the public puts up a majority of the money for the project but the revenues go back to Katz.

Props to Calgary's mayor for standing up to the Flames and Bettman. I still believe the project will be completed exactly how the Flames want it, because this is all fear mongering and pressure for their next election in an effort to remove Mayor Nenshi from office, but at least right now the city is not giving in. Nor should they. We here in Edmonton got absolutely bent over by Katz & Co because he had the politicians in his back pocket catering his every demand.

The thing I will always miss the most about Roy the coach will be his interviews. I could listen to him talk hockey all day. His passion, honesty and intelligence really shines through in those settings. Even if the team sucked it up on the ice, his interviews afterward kept me coming back for more.

I will say playing chicken with Flames ownership might not be the best thing for a politician to do. The owners are pretty powerful and influential people. They will strong arm to get what they want. I don't blame people for not wanting public funds for a sports team (I definitely fall in that category), but this will either end with Calgary and the mayor (whoever ends up in that spot) caving... or Calgary will move to Seattle.

All the Calgary mayor is asking for is the arena be publicly accessible if the bulk of the money is going to be public funds. The Flames and their ownership group wants exactly what Daryl Katz got where the public puts up the money and the private owners reap the rewards with no public access other than scheduled events.

It's nonsense for owners to actually demand this from governments but hey, if they can strong arm their way into getting it ala Katz/Edmonton then more power to them. I don't like it, but that's why they're businessmen. Then again, it doesn't get any dumber than Edmonton city council for giving in to Katz and his demands.

Totally agree with you. I just know that operation... they will strongarm, if if Calgary wants to call their bluff... they are happy to oblige.

Flames ownership is pathetic, as is Bettman, particularly considering how genorous the city is actually being.

http://www.metronews.ca/news/calgary...g-sources.html

Quote:
Sources had told Metro the latest deal on the table involved a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 model, where the City of Calgary would provide 1/3 of the upfront cost for the new arena, 1/3 would be recouped through a ticket surcharge and 1/3 would come from the Calgary Flames ownership.

The mayor confirmed that this model is "part of the deal" but he thinks it's important to see more of the details behind what was on offer.

Where talks broke down, according to sources, was in how the city might recoup its initial investment, either through property taxes or some sort of revenue sharing. It was hoped the city could get back its initial investment over the next 30 years through a lease or rental arrangement with the Flames.

Information provided to Metro indicated those were the areas the two sides couldn'tt agree upon.

CSEC was apparently looking for property tax exemption and balked at models for the city to recoup its investment, including possible revenue sharing options.
So in other words the Flames owenership doesn't want to pay a cent and, if have to, don't want to pay taxes / don't want to let the city make its money back. Really hope the city stays strong on this.

Calgary election coming up fairly quick here. Seems like the tactic is to have other candidates push for a new arena knowing that Calgarians love their hockey.

Bingo. The Flames want it all, and knowing how these things typically work, they can probably get it. Stay strong Calgary!

I feel genuinely sorry for the Mayor and others who oppose, as it's pretty much a career death sentence to jeopardize a beloved sports franchise.

I also do feel pity for the stupid people who will vote out of office those who oppose and into office those who will bend over backwards, and will suddenly complain when the price of their poutine goes up 50 cents to fund the project and that crazy pothole in the street by their house never gets filled in.

They most certainly would if he fails to live up to expectations (however outrageous they may be).

They will actually be quicker to burn him at the stake! Quebecois are held to a higher standard there.

That said... Drouin has the mindset and ego to deal with it. I don't think he will be a star, but he will be a good player and do well in that environment.

Maybe for the first little bit, but if there is one thing i know about Montreal media, it's that they will be twice as hard on him once the new player smell wears off.
