Jedi?

What's up guys, Ranger fan here. I was watching the game this afternoon, and I noticed Jed Ortmeyer is hurt. What happened? I love the guy (Wished he never left NYR), but 4-6 months is pretty serious. Is there an update of his status or anything? Hows he been for you guys while still on the team? Thanks a lot.

he's not nearly the player we thought he would be, he's not that physical and has no hands, offers little energy.

He's had surgery on the ACL and is done for the year. He was signing autographs before a game recently and when I was in line I heard him tell someone ahead of me that his knee is painfree and healing well but he had a lot of fluid drain into his ankle or something and is getting that taken care of. Otherwise he's healing well.

I liked him. He gave his all on every shift and killed penalties really well.

Exactly, he is an energy player that kills penalties and is defensively responsible. A good skater, he is most effective when he makes a read and goes hard after the puck. I think he was a little too hyped as a possible breakout offensive player over the summer when we were searching for solutions wherever possible. I just felt he never really found a spot he fit in with at the start of the season and then got injured. Should be ready for training camp and will have to fight again for a roster spot. Hopefully next season we can find a spot he can be effective in or trade him. He is a great player...just not overly talented offensively, but if every player had a heart like him we'd be winning the Cup year after year.

Mabye I expected too much, to me, Smithson is the better player between the two.

Let me clarify, I thought he was going to be another Tootoo, Nichol, Smithson type player, and he's not.

I'm thinking he won't be back next year. He might be in camp but I'm not sure he makes the team.

He was never offensively talented, not sure where you guys heard that lol. Hands of stone, but a hell of a defensively minded player. He was always a great PKer for us.

Thats exactly Jed Ortmeyer. What can I say, I loved him, would give anything for the team. Really hated seeing him go.

I agree, he's no more heart or grit than Fiddler or Philstrom and both have better hands.

I hope not. I was a little disappointed in him this season. We have a team full of big heart, little talent types.

Every team needs 2 or 3 guys like Jed.

The problem is that we have 6 or 7.

Exactly, what does he bring that Nichol, Fiddler, Smithson or Tootoo don't bring.

What did you guys expect out of him? Not sure why you guys were expecting offense. Anything thats ever been written about him says he has hands of stone. That shouldn't have been a secret. Defense and heart/grit. I realize Nashville has a lot of those types, but I honestly can't see why anything more was expected out of him than what he's brought.

I don't know what management expected but most fans aren't the least bit surprised.

I actually thought his physical play was way overrated. He's about as physical as Fiddler.

i believe he signed a two year, one way deal.
so he may not make the team but we'll be paying him.
dunno if anyone would take him on waivers or not...

I would think there would be plenty of takers. He's not a bad defenseman. Just not what we want. Not every team has too many good dmen.

Correct. I believe his cap hit is something like 750k.

He seems like a really nice guy and all, but he was probably the worst player on our team this year. Hordichuk is close, but at least he fills a need that we only have one other player to do. Our problem is we have too many penalty kill specialists and not enough, well, skilled players. The good thing is that pretty much all of these guys go to free agency next year, so we can just dump the weak links and allow more potential guys to come through the system.
