I would love to have Vanek in Edmonton, just think of having a sniper finishing Hemsky's passes, however the price tag is steep and I would not over-interpret Lowe's words.
That said GO AUSTRIA-GO VANEK

I don't think buffalo will trade with the oilers

I dont see why the Sabres wouldnt trade with the Oil especially after their 10m man scored less than 70pts the last season. Not sure as an Oilers fan if I'd welcome Vanek to the Oilers for that hefty amount of $$. The risk is signifigant if Vanek is injured or scores less than 70 pts for a consecutive season.. as that 10m man. Yes he did score 36 goals or something around that number but.. when looking at that contract, it doesnt justify a thing especially when the Oilers already have an over priced Penner. I do think Penner might earn closer to his value next season but having two risks like that is well, too risky.

The price is right if its just Pitkanen and Torres:

Vanek-Gagner-Hemmer
Penner-Horc-Nilsson
Moreau-Stoll-Cogliano
GlennX-Brodz-Pisani

Friggin awesome

Vanek's contract is actually not a bad one starting as soon as 09/10 where he will make $6.4 M through the end of his contract after the 2013/2014 season. As the deal moves on and I imagine he gets better and better against all kinds of opposition (yes I think highly of his potential) it could be a very good deal.

I can see how it would be easy to miss amidst all the OT threads infesting the board , but there has been a thread on this topic since yesterday .

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=507654

I doubt the Oilers can afford Vanek now . The cap situation today is a lot tighter than it was back when Lowe threw that offer out . I'd love to have Vanek in Edmonton if he could be squeezed in somehow , it just seems like a pretty unlikely scenario .

At least Regier didn't get all butt-hurt about the offer sheet and take it personally like certain GM's in the Los Angeles area.

Vanek is still exactly what this team needs. Hemsky and Vanek to together would be dynamite. I agree, Torres and Pitkanen for Vanek would be great. If they want to get crazy, throw in Shremp and a pick for Stafford.

Just imagine

Vanek Horcoff Hemsky
Gagner Cogliano Nilsson
Penner Stafford Pisiani
Moreau Brodziak Glencross

Now that is a contending lineup.

I doubt we'll see a trade between the two teams anytime soon. That jackass from the Sabres' brass who was whining non-stop about the offer sheet and 'vowed revenge' on the Oilers probably still cries to his mommy about it to this day. Boo-****ing-hoo.

They can keep him. Goal scoring wasn't a big issue this season (4th in the West); I doubt it'll be one next season.

If the parts in the trade are Stoll, Torres, Rolie, Schremp, Staios or picks, I would do it. However, we likely need to toss in Penner or Pitkanen, as well ... or, why would Buffalo do it?

Penner, I'm more willing to trade, but I'm sure the Sabres would want Pitkanen.

Personally, I don't think the Sabres are looking to trade Vanek. He's not overpaid for a 35 goal scorer who has missed 1 game in 3 years.

Besides, on the cash side Buffalo has paid off the highest year of the contract already. After this year ($8 MM), his cash hit is only $6.4 MM per yr. On a pure cash hit basis, for the rest of the contract, Vanek is a bargain.

Depends. If Buffalo thought the Oilers stuck them with a really bad contract, and you know how much they hate spending money, then it would be possible. Especially if Buffalo thought they we giving Edmonton 'the bad deal they negotiated in the first place'

The Oilers could in fact afford him now, but we could be in trouble in 2 years when Gagner and Cogs are up and then in 2 more years when Hemmer and Penner are up for new contracts

For me I would like to see:

Sign Ossi Vaananan

Trade Smid + Shremp for Carter (Philly)

Trade Horcoff + Torres + 1 of our better def prospects + Ana 1st for Vanek

Sign Pitkanen

Vanek Gagner Hemsky
Penner Carter Nilsson
Glencross Cogliano Pisani
Moreau Brodziak Stortini
Pouliot Reasoner

Souray Pitkanen
Gilbert Grebeskov
Vaananan/Greene Staios

With our current goalies we would be around that 56 mil mark

I don't think they will deal him. He really came on during the 2nd half of the season and still topped 30 goals despite a disastrous start to the season. He was a key factor in them almost sneaking into the playoffs.

He's really a 40+ goal guy even without Briere and Drury when you take out the early season jitters he had (somewhat expected).

And they already ate the first year of his contract which was the most money, from here on out I think his contract is actually quite reasonable.

Although a top line of Vanek Horcoff Hemsky would indeed dominate, there is no way Buffalo would trade with the Oil. Too bad though, if a trade could be done based on any of a combination of Torres Stoll Schremp and Pitkanen, it probably would benefit both teams.

I'd happily take Vanek here.

He loves Alberta, and would be exactly the player we're missing.

Cost wise, somehow his contract got ridiculous, and will be hard to fit him in once Gag, Cogs, Nillson, Hemsky need raises in 3-4 years.

its amazing what kind of pace vanek went on... he almost got 40 goals again without drury or briere

the guy is a 40 goal scorer, and theres no doubt he will get that next year

If you can get the right amount of salary going the other way, sure.

But it seems like an awfully tricky deal to pull off.

Where were we ranked in real goals. I think it's a joke that they count shootout goals in the total. I consider myself a hardcore fan and I didn't even know they did this until half way through the season.
