I was discussing with MoMo316 on #HFHabs (insert chat pimp here) and Brian Rolston could be a pretty adequate replacement. He's a more competent forward, has an even better slap shot and is tough as nails. He'd likely cost a bit more, but certainly not substantially more.

I'm in the "don't re-sign Streit" bed for those curious. I guess we could re-sign him as a forward/injury-replacement defenseman, but that seems to me to be stockpiling the wrong kind of player at a fairly high cost.

Unfortunately for him, there are better players than him on the blueline. He's excellent on the PP, but he's easily the worst defenseman on the team.

Would you bench O'byrne or Gorges for him for the next year or two? I wouldn't.
I recall Streit's been quoted a few times saying he prefers to play defense, but he's just not effective there. His outlet passes are great, sure, but the rest of his game as a defenseman is wanting.

No he didn't. He played mostly as a defenseman. If you can't tell what position he is playing how can you possibly evaluate his play

I am for re-signing Streit at the right price - say 2.2 million.

One thing I want to point out. When he is on the point - count the number of his shots that are blocked or miss the net.

I have been pointing out this issue all season to my friends and once they start watching for it they are astounded. Quite honestly, I don't know how he got 60 points - but that is IMHO very impressive.

Now your comparing Hammer to Streit? There is no comparison to be made except that they both can play D. Hammer is like a combination of Rivet and Souray and is way more of a complete player than Streit. Hammer is signed for the next 3 years, we don't need to think about replacing him for a while, which is a good thing...
You need to read more carefully.

I did not compare Streit to Hamrlik. What I said is that there is no reason to believe that we can replace Streit as our PP quarterback - just as there is no reason to believe that we can replace Hamrlik.

My point is that I see no reason at all to believe that we have anyone who can step up as the PP quarterback if Streit leaves.

People who don't want him signed for the most part do not want to see him making more than 2 or 2.5 million dollars.

What he brings is special, no doubt but can it be replaced? That is the decision that will have to be made.

It was a nice goal but he was pretty invisible the rest of the game, especially on the powerplay.

Not his fault only... our hold PP sucks at the moment. And Andrej Markov is really not in his best form. Again a lot of mistakes yesterday...

How about we let the playoffs unroll before we decide anything...

Good point.

2.5M for Streit is not an overpayment by any means and I would love for the Habs to give him that.

He has a nice ability to carry the puck up ice on the PP, either making a good pass or gaining the zone with control. We missed that while he was out.

Streit's was the most important goal of the game and involved a level of skill that few can provide. He zoomed by an elite defenceman and deked Thomas right out of his jockstrap. The Bruins didn't look the same after that.

Even is he's a number 6 defenceman in his own zone, he is a solid 3rd liner with the proven ability to put up 60 points.

The bottom end for a 60 point player, F or D doesn't matter, is at least $2.5M.

That's why I bumped it up. That goal was pivotal.

Still I doubt the Habs offer him more than $2.5M while some other moron GM will offer him $4M or more thinking he's some sort of Bryan Rafalski.

To the guy who mentionned Rolston. I'm quite sure he'll be getting at least 4m in the off-season. For 3.5m-4m, I'd take him on my team. He'd certainly fill the void that Ryder has left. He's quite good on the point too.
