The towels...

What is up with these?? Doesn't anyone else think is really gimmicky? Something out of Anaheim or Vancouver. Just a cheesy way to create a "whiteout" effect.

Also it makes the building less intimidating, diminishes the noise level because people aren't clapping their hands.

I gotta admit though the TV image of Jean Chretien mindlessly waving the towel with his other hand on his hip was priceless.

Actually, from what I remember, the towel thing was huge in Winnipeg.

It creates a pretty amazing effect when everyone is doing it. It's not great for noise but I mean, if we were making noise all game, everyone would lose their voice by the third.

It's also for NORTH CAROLINA!

As far as game sevens go, I found Washington's sea of red T-shirts more intimidating than the towels in Montreal or San Jose. But the T-shirts didn't work did they? Keep them towels coming.

Seeing how nerve racking playoff games are I appreciate having the towel to wipe off the sweat.

The twirling action from others around me also makes for nice air circulation in an otherwise pretty hot building (especially these days). That said, you sweat most when the game is tight and the towels get twirled most when the Habs take a lead, so it's a bit of a catch-22.

The only thing is that it's not to vent the fans but it's only another for Boivin and Gainey to save on AC. They all receive the air up here!

And that's an excellent counter point.

Maybe it's just for Boivin after he gets all hot and bothered from kissing Kovalev's sticks?

uhh, in vancouver's case, its not cheesy at all. It all goes back to Roger Nielson waving a white flag by putting a white towel on a stick while protesting the refs.

The next game at home, the fans brought white towels to the game and the rest is history.

I actually hesitated about putting an "s" or not, then thought the better of it.

Of everything, "towel power" is probably my favorite.

I hate the thunder stick crap.

Nothing quite beats the noise of a playoff crowd but there is just something to be said for when the camera pans the crowd and you see 21273 people roaring and waving the towels.

Thunder sticks are good for crowds that need something more to actually make noise. Montreal does not need this crap.

And i agree, the sight of each and every person in the building waving the towel is awesome

In women's international hockey, the fans all bring Maxi pads sanitary napkins (unused) and twirl them around. The effect is quite hypnotic and very absorbent too...

I wonder if it's work if they set up red white and blue towels in specific seats so that the CH would be visible if everyone got twirling at once. that'd be sweet.

they should give laser pointers to the crowd and let them practice their aiming at Biron

Who had the bright idea to have everyone wave white towels after the results of games 5/6? Genius.

You should be working for the Habs, clearly!
