Michel is first and above all a Male name.(St-Michel=St-Michael) Micheline is the real female form of the name. But, somewhere during the 20th centry, someone in France decided to name his/her daughter Michel-le with the extra LE. The anglophones liked the sound of it and adopted it with Michele, thinking it was a female name.

In french we have also some girls named Claude, which is a male name. the Beatles did not help with their song either...

And English people have those double gender names like Tracy, Terry, etc...

True fact: The Beatles' song entitled "Michelle" was actually about Michelle Therrien.

The English translation for the French male name of Michel is Michael.

It doesn't take much of a stretch of imagination to shorten Michael to Mike.

The phonetic pronunciation of the French name Michel is = mee-shehl or meesh-ehl.

Therrien has repeatedly told non french speaking announcers to call him Michael. C'mon, he'd get the hell beat out of him walking around with a girls name if he never.
Fact is..that is 100% True.

"Ils sont" translates as "they're", not "there". And I'd guess NHL Network is staffed by more Canadians than Americans anyway.

In my days, we all called our idol Rocket. Fusée wouldn't have sounded right.

Because the English equivalent is Michael and just like French people francofy English names sometimes, American or English people tend to do the same with French names. Your making way too big a deal of it. The direct translation is Michael.

A HA !

This must be the reason why Pauline Marois needs to re-open la loi 101!

We all need to take a deep breathe and focus on the things that make us the same, and stop focussing on the things that make us different.

And since we are on the topic, different does not equal bad, just different. People need to start feeling confident about themselves and less scared of others.

Maybe the question is:

Is Michael Therrien anti-french for anglicizing his name? :sarcasm

Cause believe it or not, most English people I've met in my life are anti-french. The reason being: they feel they've been treated unfairly by french people, or that they are being oppressed for being English. I can't really blame them I guess, but people need to learn to not paint all people with the same brush. I know some chill french people, but most of them unfortunately reside on here (Before anyone flips out, this was a joke)

Seriously though, you have to understand being a French person is like being a Canadian minority, but in Quebec, being an English person is like being the minority, and we're constantly feeling oppressed by laws made that are pro-french, anti-english, that type of thing. So to think a lot of English people are anti-french is probably true, but to complain about English people being anti-french when so many french people are clearly anti-english and even the government makes laws like the one where french writing has to be 60% larger then English writing on signs, is what makes those people anti-french. It's not the people that make it this way as much as small groups of racists (on both sides of the spectrum) who make everyone out to be that way when really, it's only pro-anglo and pro-french extremist who act this way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, who cares who's pro-english, anti-french, pro-french, anti-english? The point is, for the most part, we aren't those people so we should stop trying to point the finger and just accept that some people are *******s out there and there's nothing we can do to change them other then leading by example. I think the French and English just misunderstand eachother and it's really sad that some of us can't get along, cause in the course of my life I've met many really cool french people who aren't sepertists, french extremists etc just like I'm sure many of you french folks out there have met plenty of english people who aren't anti-french, speak french, make an effort to fit in with the french crowd, but all in all, English people feel like the minority here cause they are. Is NHL Network anti-french? I doubt it. Thinking the way you think is what makes people anti-anything cause you question if they're anti-french over a simple name pronounciation. Do I think people are anti-english when they pronounce my name the french way? Of course not.

Answer- Years of being kicked in the teeth.

After a while, you start to see it in everything. In this case, it is just years of conditioning colouring his view of an innocent event.

What will they stoop to next over at the NHL Network? Calling Guillaume - "William".

The horror, the horror.

Let's call Gaborik and Hossa "MARIO", because Marian sounds exactly like Marie-Anne, a french name, and they would get the hell beat out of them when walking in the streets of Montreal...

Umm...
The guys on NHL Network aren't American...they are Canadian, its run by TSN (which is owned by ESPN).

Who really cares how they pronounce his name? What you should be consider with is the lack of commentary on Montreal games on all networks except for RDS (which I can't watch because I can't understand french, well most of it).

He's the enemy. I'd call him diarreahea-face on national tv. Get into their heads. MUAHAHAHAHAHA
