Best "Non-Drafted" Players

Who are the best players to never have been drafted by the NHL currently playing. Players who shifted to the NHL from the WHL do not count (i.e. Mark Messier).

First two that come to mind as a Leafs fan are Curtis Joeseph and Ed Belfour.

Send a message via MSN to Malakhov
If Gretzky is in that list then easily it's him.

FYI, Mark Messier didn't shift leagues, he was pick #48 in the 1979 entry draft.

Adam Oates would also come to mind. Came out of RPI as a free agent before signing with Detroit.

I think Dino Ciccarelli. What more could you ever want out of a hockey player.

I'd say Ciccarelli and Oates are the best.

Gretzky doesn't count, as he entered the NHL via the WHA. Had he entered the draft, he would've been far and away the #1 overall pick. This is for guys who actually entered the draft and weren't drafted.

messier did play in the WHA and was drafted, as did Rob Ramage, Rick Vaive, and a few others (a whole slew of them that played on the Birmingham Bulls)

The way Pocklington escaped with Gretzky was that he signed him to a persona services contract, not a standard WHA/NHL contract.

Orr was a pre draft player when teams and their players were purchased.

Stastny also deserves an asterisk from this list provided. it was a different time, different era when Eastern Europeans weren't drafted, they defected (and rarely)
