Canadian Press Poll: Habs overtake Leafs as Canada's team

I know this is probably because the Leafs suck and the Habs don't and I know polls usually mean jack but it's always nice to beat the Leafs.

And just for extra amusement, here's a link to the story on CBC's site. You know, that station that has ignored the Habs for the most part for the last decade or so.

That is beacause no Leaf fans are watching hokcey or visiting CBC web site right now.
If they conduct the poll next October I believe the the Leafs would win.

I think this was always the way. Just watch a Habs game in any other Canadian city and the stands will be filled with Habs jerseys. Plus, the Leafs get jammed down everyones throat every Saturday night all winter. People who don't know a hockey puck from a horse pucky would say the Leafs cause its the only team they have ever seen.

Poll wasn't conducted online. Was a 1,000 person random telephone survey.

Hey TC, nice to see you over on the Habs board. Thanks for pointing out that it was a real poll, but I also have no doubt Leafs support is artificially low right now.

IMO, right now the Leafs are in the best position to start building a real contender in maybe 20 years, and for me are the most fascinating story in hockey this offseason. So fan support has nowhere to go but up.

Absolutely, the poll numbers done last year had Ottawa at 15% and now they're at 5%. The numbers for Toronto are pretty consistent, I think what's high is the height of the Montreal numbers. At so, important to note is that the question was what Canada's team was, not what is your favourite team.

The Habs were the only Canadian team even in at the time. Our country'd have major issues if the Leafs were at the top of that poll.

True. But let's face it, country's still got issues.

edit- maybe some kind of smiley is needed, but I can't think which one quite works for "lighthearted reference to internal Canadian issues" ?

If you polled 1,000 random HF'ers, I bet the Habs would be their most hated team too, judging by the GDT's in the playoffs forum.

CBC had nothing to do with the poll. Harris/Decima Research conducted the poll for Canadian Press.

Montreal could be St-Pierre-de-Miquelon-de-La-Tortue Team, I just want them to win against Philly. Please hockey gods, remove the curse.

Leafs still get higher ratings cause their fans all watch in English (for the most part)... or fans are split English/French when the CBC and RDS both air the games....

We are bigger in numbers overall... but the Leafs are still the CBC's Cash Cow.

I am curious of what our real numbers are. If we combined CBC and RDS it would be crazy. Not just now with no canadian teams left in the playoffs.

I think every year it is very close but very minimal compared to the rest of the canadian tems in Canada.

Bottom line, I think you can not give out a clear cut winner but Canada is represented by both teams. Just Montreal gets no credit which is stupid.

I remember last year at about this time all over TSN they were saying "Ottawa is Canada's team". These polls are pointless and it's obvious the reason Montreal is first because they are the only team left.

The only fans I care about are the ones who stand behind this team win or lose, not the bandwagon fans who jump on when the team is winning and the ones who stop believing after the team loses 2 games in a row. That being said i'd rather have less fans who stick behind their team win or lose than "fans" who jump aboard just because the team is winning.

I bet you CBC will start showing more Habs games. They have lost a lot of revenue because they were neglecting the Habs throughout the season (even after they said, CBC is Canadian Broadcasting Channel, and HNIC doesn't mean Hockey Night in Toronto).

They promised to show more Habs games and have failed so many many Habs fans (even those in Toronto) watch the games on RDS as they have been faithful.

That's what they were saying but a similar poll to this year's at this point in the playoffs still had the Make Believes beating out Snottawa, and Montreal was second in that poll.
