0.95 Seconds; Begin's Penalty Discussion (merged)

Time from when Kappanen touched the puck until Begin made contact, stopwatch and rewind on the PVR, 10 trials.

Maybe Begin shouldn't have taken that chance and maybe the Habs could have put in a better effort in the first 55 minutes, but it wasn't a penalty and that's frustrating.

Yeah good point but it doesn't really matter. The call was a penalty and we just have to accept it even though it's super frustrating.

Thanks for taking the time (10x) to check out the play again. I've seen the play twice at regular speed and thought it was a borderline late hit.

You definitely have me curious, and later on I'll have to go back and check myself.

You know what? It would be more frustrating to know if it wasn't a penalty.

I was as pissed as anyone at Begin after the game but after Carbo's comments after the game I got to wondering.

I can accept the loss considering the lack of intensity this team has shown for so many games in these playoffs. Too many players not ready for prime time.

Watching at regular speed, I thought it was a late hit. And I still do. Stupid penalty.

Flyers should stop embarassing themselves with the conspiracy theory right about now....won against Washington because of non-penalty calls all in the 3rd period and now this.....

It is ridiculous. All these "fans" going after Begin for what was the marginal call if I ever saw one.

That hit happens all game long and folks are bellyaching and screaming for Begin's head. Some folks make me sick.

There was NOTHING wrong with that hit that wasn't wrong all game and all season long. Folks are frustrated and want to blame somebody, but Begin is really not the guy to blame. Bogus call. End of story

If you have a chance to watch the game again, you'll probably see 3 or 4 other occasions similar to the Begin's hit not getting called as penalties... Whatever, what's done is done...

Go go for game 5! Win it and put the pressure on Philadelphia to end the series on their home ice...

You are a thoughtful guy, but I respectfully disagree

The call was made because Begin's intention were clear.
He was going in there to hit Kapanen no matter what.
It wasn't Begin finishing his check, it was Begin going at the guy.

And no, I don't blame the loss on Begin. A game is 60 minutes.

I haven't mastered knowledge of the NHL rule book, but to me it looked like Bégin was trying to check the Flyer player into the open bench. To my mind, it deserved a penalty for injury attempt. As an interference call, not so much.

I agree but I would say more like 7 or 8 at least. Maybe more.

If they call that type of hit you'd see many more PIMs

Hmmmmmm. Let me know about that hit into an open bench rule. I really can't find that one.

You really think Begin thought "oh boy, open bench, yee haw!"

Don't let the Flyers fans see this thread, they're stopwatches run at different speeds than ones based on the concept of time does.
So....anyone verify this bychance?

There's no penalty in the book for what you're describing. A huge part of the game is the physical play near the puck, including right after you've played it.

remember the days when more than 3 steps was a charging call? Begin had a penalty in those days, but this wasn't a late hit.

Whine, whine, whine...get over it...it was a penalty...Begin has to play smarter than that.

It's like the boarding call against Richards in the first period when no one actually hit the boards from his check.

I agree. Charging is now a really devastating hit where the hitter came a long ways and the other guy didn't get up

Smarter than who? The refs?

Make the call the last 3 minutes, make it all game long. That is all I ask.
