Wouldn't all of the Habs rookies qualify? The OP said players, not coaches.

The Stars rookies would also count, I believe. I'm pretty sure they are the only other possibility.

Patrice Brisebois and Mike Sillinger played together in the World Juniors in 1991.

Does that count? That would eliminate all the Montreal Canadiens.

Wow, good catch. I guess that would qualify.

Stu Barnes and Sillinger are close with the WJ team, but still never played together.

It would be interesting to see how well this rolls out to historical players, to see if it can happen within the 6 degrees that's usually the standard.

When the Kevin Bacon game started, someone created a software program to calculate a Bacon number for any actor, present or past, using the Internet Movie Database. Someone could theoretically do the same with the hockeydb.com.

Let's do Maurice Richard

Maurice Richard played with Henri Richard (59-60 Habs)
Henri Richard played with Guy Lafleur (74-75 Habs)
Guy Lafleur played with Curtis Leschyshn (90-91 Nords)
Leschyshn played with Sillinger (00-01 Sens)

Sillinger number of 4. It probably is harder than with actors, because a career is much shorter. If you go pre-WW2, it's probably really hard to do it, because careers are shorter, compared to actors.

You can do international as well though:

Tretiak played with Larionov (CSKA Moscow 83-84)
Larionov played with Yzerman (95-96 Wings)
Yzerman played with Sillinger (94-95 Wings)

Yeah, I was also thinking about pre-season play with some of the Star rookies.

Almost the entire current Blackhawks squad would pass this test if Sillinger didn't play 13 games with Havlat in Ottawa in 2000.

And Zyuzin with Tampa.

And he didn't finish the year with Chicago, but he played with Martin Lapointe for a number of years.

That could potentially be very, very useful. The formula would need to be enhanced for usability, but something like that would have utility from fans to broadcasters to journalists. Not just connections to Mike Sillinger obviously, but a resource to see who has played with who in an instant.

I don't have that level of technical knowhow. If I did, I would have given it a shot.

so wait, if the habs are the only team without a current player who has played with sillinger (which i think is true), then they can be the only team with exceptions to the rule?

i'll try to confirm this...

Anaheim: Weight (st louis)
Atlanta: Zhitnik (nyi)
Boston: Hnidy (ottawa)
Buffalo: Spacek (columbus)
Calgary: Langkow (phoenix)
Carolina: Whitney (columbus)
Chicago: Havlat (ottawa)
Colorado: Smyth (nyi)
Columbus: Vyborny (columbus)
Dallas: no one?
Detroit: Draper (detroit)
Edmonton: Staios (vancouver)
Florida: Cullimore (vancover)
Los Angeles: Nagy (phoenix)
Minnesota: Demitra (st louis)
Montreal: no one?
Nashville: Erat (nashville)
New Jersey: Rachunek (ottawa)
New York Islanders: SILLINGER
New York Rangers: Mara (phoenix)
Ottawa: Alfredsson (ottawa)
Philadelphia: Timonen (nashville)
Phoenix: Doan (phoenix)
Pittsburgh: Hall (nashville)
San Jose: Shelley (columbus)
St. Louis: fatty (st louis)
Tampa Bay: Lecavalier (tampa)
Toronto: Tucker (tampa)
Vancouver: Ohlund (vancouver)
Washington: Kozlov (nyi)

I would like to take a break from this to point out how refreshing it is to have a brilliant, unique, and interesting thread on these boards. Keep up the creativity people, this is hilarious.

There's still a link with Gorges playing with Nils Ekman in San Jose, who played with Sillinger in Tampa Bay.

Well, depends how far you want to go.

For instance, T.J Hensick played with Mark Rycroft in Lake Erie, who played with Sillinger in St. Louis in 03-04.

You just need to ask yourself if taking the minors into account is in the spirit of Two Degrees of Mike Sillinger. I like to think that it is.

I think ANY player in the league is related through at most 3 degrees of separation. Nowadays players play until mid to late 30's, and due to free agency play on several teams.
You can easily connect many players from 1990 to a rookie today, because there are so many current players who played back then, like Roberts, Modano, Sakic, Chelios, Federov, Recchi, Jagr, Roenick, etc.

ahh... missed that

that leaves montreal and dallas as the only two teams that CAN have players with more than 2 degrees of separation from sillinger.

If anyone else is as obsessed with this as i now am, you can probably end this thread by doing analysis on about 60 players (everyone to play for the habs and stars this year)
