ESPN2 to show 40 games

The National Hockey League and ESPN, Inc. have reached a wide-ranging, multimedia extension of their agreement, highlighted by ESPN's exclusive coverage of the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals and of the All-Star Game. Other elements of the deal include extensive post-season coverage with continued ESPN and ESPN2 exclusivity during the Conference Finals and an additional exclusivity from each Conference Semifinal series (total of two games per series). The agreement covers the 2004 - 2005 season and includes options for ESPN to extend the agreement to the 2005 - 2006 and 2006 - 2007 seasons as well.

ESPN2 will televise 40 fully exclusive regular-season games, on a consistent Sunday and Wednesday schedule. Rights for ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes, ESPN International, ESPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN Video-on-Demand, ESPN Broadband and ESPN Wireless have also been secured. The promotional content and sharing agreement with NHL.com will continue. ESPN and the NHL will continue to collaborate on Interactive TV.
"For many years, the NHL has been an important programming element for ESPN and we are thrilled to continue the relationship," said George Bodenheimer, President ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports. "The increased exclusivity and addition of the All-Star Game will enhance the already outstanding coverage we provide for our fans and the value we deliver to our affiliates and advertisers."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said, "ESPN has been, is now and will continue to be the definitive cable sports viewing destination, and our partnership with ESPN has been an extremely productive one. We are very pleased that the partnership will continue to be one of growth and we greatly appreciate all of ESPN's efforts and support on our behalf."
Specifics of the agreement include:

Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals exclusively on ESPN;
Exclusive coverage of the All-Star Game and All-Star Weekend activities;
Continued exclusive Conference Finals telecasts;
Additional exclusivities from each Conference Semifinal series;
Extensive Conference Quarterfinal and Semifinal coverage;
40 exclusive regular-season games on ESPN2 - 23 on Wednesdays, beginning Opening Night, and 17 on Sundays;
Coverage of the NHL Draft on ESPN2;
Continued agreements for ESPN.com and ESPN International;
Select telecasts on ESPN HD and ESPN Deportes;
Rights for ESPN Classic, ESPN Video-on-Demand, ESPN Broadband, ESPN Wireless.

Glad to see that there will be some ESPN HD broadcasts. While not affordable for most, this is the best way the game can be presented on TV format at this time.

Does the exclusivity exclude CBC? Or is it American/cable exclusivity?

Exclusivity relates to ESPN booting local competing broadcasts in the States on stations similar to Rogers SportsNet that show games to the local region.

The Exclusivity wouldn't extend to Canada.

Only 40? That seems low. How many did they show this season??

And will ESPN air any games? Looks like NHL on ESPN just keep getting worse and worse but noone can see it. I heard a while back that Spike TV wanted hockey and recently read in the USA Today that TNT was interested. Why do they keep on going back to ESPN?

Because ratings are low enough for hockey even when they are on a sports channel. They maybe are geting almost nothing from ESPN but its still more coverage and money then they would have from Spike. Hockey is in survival mode for national TV.... They are taking whatever they can get.

unless there are no-compete clauses (and I doubt there is), the NHL can sign with any and every cable station they want whether its ESPN, SpikeTV, TBS, TNT, HGTV, Food network. why not go back to espn. the other 5 nights of the week are divulged in baseball, football or basketball so its not like they'd lose a whole lot of viewers anyways

ESPN/ESPN 2 showed 70 regular season games this year, and 104 games in 2002-2003...so where does it end...?? next contract ESPN will say they will only show one game each week...then 1 a month???

And the number of people with HD in their homes is higher than many think....when two teams are playing that I have no particular interest in, (such as one of the many Detroit games broadcasted nationally) I'd still have an interest in watching if it's avaliable in HD. Watching HD games on my widescreen TV are great.

I think ESPN has already said that NHL2night will not be on next year.
