Brisebois should be the 7th D.

Streit is not a defenseman.
Emelin is not coming over.
Dandenault is no longer a D.
Carle and Valentenko are too young to be sitting in the stands.

Even accepting those items you've listed (which for the most part I do), I think the Habs would be able to easily find a better player than Brisebois on the open market to be their cheap 7th D.

While Breezer might be one of the coolest guys on the Habs, he needs to realize it's over for him. He came back to Montreal, got love back from the fans, so now he can end it in a positive note in his hometown. I don't know if I could take another year of mind-boggling Brisebois plays...

Well that's for sure where we differ, then. I think the Habs could choose from around 20 guys for $700k who would be better than Brisebois. They'd probably have a really good chance of getting some guys on the rebound or who needed a change of minor league scenery for $475k who would be better than Brisebois too, with some good scouting around. Although at that low salary level, it's pretty much meaningless whether you're talking $700k or $475k. Or even $1M, probably, unless Gainey has some really big surprises in store that will put us a lot closer to the cap than it otherwise looks like we'll be. Bottom line is I think Brisebois is a fringe-y depth NHLer, and that there are A LOT of those. Some who would be better for us than he would be.
