I wanted Sundin for this yrs run when it looked like he'd become available but if he is up for grabs and willing to take a one yr deal you'd have to at the very least kick the tires.
As well as Dubi played he is still very much a work in progress and has to bring alot more consistency which will come in time where as Mats is as consistent as it gets in the NHL as a PAG #1 center and he and Jagr would be a ton to handle down low and on the cycle and I think each play a similar game and can feed off eachother big-time.
It may be that we need to sign either Jagr or someone like a Sundin for a season and it might not matter in that case going really high to get them. Looking ahead LeCavalier goes UFA in 09-10. If the Lightning remain bottom feeders I got to think he might want to go somewhere else. Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk go UFA in 10-11. They also have been playing for non contenders. All we need to do is get one of those guys and then the real transition will be in effect. Signing someone like a Hossa long term this summer might negate our ability to go after the above.
Would love to get Mats...Drury or Sundin can play on the wing.
Even if JJ is back, Rangers could be able to fit him under the cap(if Shanny is coming of the books).

as for Rozsival, it depends on the terms in both $$$ and years.
You have to remember just how sparse quality dmen are and the one's that do become available either have flaws to overlook or in the case of Campbell will be getting 6.5 per for 5 or 6 yrs.
as for aging superstars you have to remember something, if they sign a one yr deal as Mats has been doing there is little to no downside as it offers flexiblity for the future while providing a stopgap until somebody younger is ready as well as if they really underperform you can bury the salary in the minors and avaoid tha cap hit in the 1st yr of a 35+ yr old players unlike if you give 2 yrs where you're on the hook in that 2nd year regardless.
Sundin still has some hockey left in that big body and as shown by Jagr don't underestimate a great aging players desire to win the Cup, especially Mats who's yet to do it.

Rozsival was abysmal when it mattered. I realize there is a shortage of quality d-men out there, but I refuse to call Rozsival a quality d-man. I'm not going to throw a 1st pairing salary at a guy who should be a 3rd d-man at the absolute most.
The guy is 6'2 210 and absolutely refuses to take a hit. If he even sees someone near him when he has the puck, he just dumps it to whoever might be close enough to get hit with it. Plus he couldn't even manage to take Kennedy off the puck without taking a hooking penalty. Thats not the kind of defense I want.

Thats another problem. The whole idea of "stop-gapping" is a bad one. If we're going to sign a guy as a temporary solution, sign the guy we already have. Jagr. Don't bring in some other guy who isn't familiar with our system just so we can cross out fingers and hope Cherepanov turns out to be a 40 goal scorer.
I love Mats Sundin and always have, but I don't think he fits this team at all right now. Yes, he played wing 14 years ago, but he's as much a natural centermen as you can find, and center is a definate strength of this team.
That being said, I would never complain about having Mats Sundin on my team. My favorite Sundin moment was in the final of the 06' olympics when he actually snapped Saku Koivu's stick in half while winning the face off that lead directly to Lidstom's rediculous slapper that won the game. Not only did he win the most important face off of the game, he took Koivu right out of the play and made it a man up situation.
I have always liked Sundin, but I don't think he would be a good fit with our depth at center. We would be banking on Drury or him playing well on the wing. Not a guarantee. Re-sign Jagr, sign Ryder to play with Gomer, and lets get this thing started for next year.
I don't think he'd come, he refused getting rented out this year, I think he wants to stay loyal with Toronto, and I hope for his sake he does. I also feel that Jagr is on his way out. Put the C on Shanny for a year if he signs, hand it off to Dubinsky in the '10 season, and start building around guys like Dubi and Staal. Not saying thats the right direction to go, but it's where I'd like to see them go.
