Laurence Gilman named Director of Hockey Administration

Apparently he knows a lot about the CBA and will be mainly utilized as a "capologist".

This sends red flags up for me as he was part of the front office that drove the Coyotes into the ground before current Coyotes GM Don Maloney was hired.

As far as I know, it's not really his fault that Barnett was absolutely brutal with player personnel decisions. Didn't help that their scouting was pretty bad too.

In case anyone missed it in the other thread, some quotes I dug up:

Quote:
When the next NHL general managerís job opens up, donít be surprised to see Laurence Gilmanís name climb to the top of the list of candidates. The Phoenix Coyotes assistant General Manager fits the new NHL mold perfectly -- heís an attorney with keen hockey knowledge and a thorough command of the CBA, a must for NHL executives these days.

Gilman spent 13 seasons with the Coyotes, the last six as assistant general manager. Earlier, he held several positions, including director of hockey administration and legal counsel.

Quote:
"Possible Ferguson successors include Scotty Bowman, Glenn Healy, Neil Smith, Colin Campbell and other excellent GMs or assistants currently under contracts with other teams, including Detroit's assistant GM Jim Nill and Phoenix assistant Laurence Gilman, considered one of the best legal-salary cap minds in the NHL."

Its nice to see that our new commander in chief is backing up his words with actions. I for one am surprised how quickly he hired this guy. Must have been a pretty sweet deal, considering his name has been popping up in GM discussions. You would think he could have at least garnered another Assistant GM job, nice to have him on the team though.

Tambelini to me looks like he's being squeezed out

For now he's the Asst to Gillis... but why do they need three of them
Gillis already said, Gilman is his money man... so what does Tamby do... exactly? Seems repetitive to me

The same thing he did before? Tambellini didn't handle the types of things Gilman has been brought in to do; that was part of Nonis' job.

Gillis specifically said on the radio that Gilman will handle the entire financial aspect of the organization so Tambellini and himself can solely concentrate on player personnel.

This guy is handling the business/legal affairs. I.e. Gillis is delegating that duty out so he can concentrate on being a GM, and not a lawyer and accountant.
