Sean Avery update

Very good news from Larry today. Avery is healthy, and wants to stay in NY.

Quote:
"I was writing my will that first night," Avery told The Post by phone yesterday. "I was in bad shape. I was nervous. I was trying not to think about it.

"I thought I was done."

"I feel 1,000 times better now; I feel great,"

----

Still, Avery made it clear his priority is to remain in New York.

"I bleed Ranger blue," said No. 16. "It would be very disappointing if I don't get to come back and play here.

"Losing this series is extremely upsetting, not only on a personal level, but because of the passion of the fans here who enhance every experience of being a Ranger.

"The way it ended, it's like we let down the city. I want to come back and win for these people as much as for myself and my teammates."

i hope he comes back, but not at a ridiculous salary that cripples us from addressing another need..

either he's just saying all the right things, or he really means what he's saying.. i'm hoping it's the later..

Avery's regular season numbers were:
57 Games, 15 Goals, 18 Assists, 33 Points (team's 8th-highest point total)

If you extrapolate over 82 games, the numbers become:
82 Games, 22 Goals, 26 Assists, 48 Points (team's 4th-highest point total)

[It's appropriate to extrapolate in his case because the injuries that shortened his season are relatively unlikely to recurr; Avery is just 28 years old, his body is not breaking down]

Avery's post season numbers were:
8 Games, 4 Goals, 3 Assists, 7 Points

Add in the speed, the hits, the fights, and all the "Sean Avery intangibles."

HUGE loss if he walks.

Is he still going to be interning at Vogue?

I'm glad he's doing better. I think he's a world class *******, but I like the Rags enough to hope he'll bring a lot back to the team next year.

Question for Ranger fans:

If Jagr stays how much can you afford to give Avery?

If Jagr leaves how much can you afford to give him?

its not that the rangers cant afford to give him his money...its that at some point its just too much....4.5 million for a player who puts in a point every other game and fights and talks is a bit much.....3.5 is reasonable.....

Screw the salary cap, Avery is FN awesome and worth every penny! He wills us to win.

Im glad he's doing better and I hope he gets resigned for a few more years.

I'm split on Avery..

on one side I see a talented winger that this team needs. On the other side I can see a guy who self destructs somewhere along the way through his 3 or so year contract he'd most likely command. There are things we don't know that will ultimately decide if he's a Ranger - how well-liked he is in the locker room, in particular - something I can't comment on positively or negatively.

you don't give guys like sean avery 4 year contracts. we love him now, but it can change real quick with a guy like that.

Could be that Sean is angling for leverage, but I'm thinking not.

He wants to be a Ranger. Atta boy Sean

I'd give him a 2yr/8M if he asked but anything more than that I think is too much. I think he's really important; important enough that I'd consider paying him a little extra just to NOT have to play against him.

I agree, but that's exactly why he's going to be looking for one of that length. He's a smart guy, he knows that his style of play could make him break down at any time. Thus he's going to want some job security.

3 years/11 million with a vested option for a 4th.

Just read the article by Brooks. I love how he brings up the Daily News report for no apparent reason:

Quote:
Avery said he was in "such bad shape the first couple of days," that he had no idea that one publication reported that he'd suffered cardiac arrest and was found unconscious in a Manhattan hotel room before being rushed to the hospital at 3:30 the morning following the game.

"Nobody said anything, but then it kind of funneled through," said Avery. "To make up lies, it just shows the credibility of the people who would put that stuff out there and then try to stand by it even when it's proven false.

"That anyone would print something that's just false . . . I don't know why people have the need to lie about me."

i found brooks' commentary in his slapshots column on sunday funny. redundant but funny.

as i said all along, the daily news sucks when it comes to rangers coverage.
