I'm happy with the roster as it is right now...

I only want a big time scorer (like Hossa or Jagr) or/and a shutdown defensive specialist...

Even, if they don't get anyone, I'll be happy... we still finished first and have a lot of young players who'll only get better...

First, let me say that I don't want any of our UFA back. Let them walk...

It's not a secret, we need/want three balanced offensive lines for next year. IMO, Grabovski isn't the answer. Next year will be an important year for Higgins. He could play his future with the team. I would like to see him become a definitive center. We saw that he had major flaws but still, he already played there and I think that he could take the summer to work on the biggest problems. I'm not giving up on him and I want to see him get as much chances he can.

It will be a busy summer for Gainey. I would like him to bring two UFA.

First category: Top 2 lines winger
-Brunnstrom
-Jagr

Second category: 3rd line two-way winger
-Rolston
-Stillman
-Brunette

My lineup:

Brunnstrom/Jagr-Plekanec-AKostitsyn
SKostitsyn-Higgins-Kovalev
Rolston/Stillman/Brunette-Koivu-Latendresse
Bégin/Chipchura/Lapierre/Kostopoulos
*Grabovski or D'Agostini

Markov-Komisarek
Hamrlik-O'Byrne
Bouillon-Gorges
*Brisebois or other UFA

How can we get Carter or Marleau without giving any roster player?

Lalime? Where is Halak?

Also, I don't think that we're a better team with this lineup...

You don't think we're a better team by replacing Ryder/Streit with Hossa and Smolinski with Holik??

The change of Halak to Lalime is not enough to say that those acquisitions wouldn't improve us.

But indeed, if we lose Halak, one would imagine we'd be gaining an asset somewhere else, as he'd be moved via trade. And Lalime is far from the first goalie I'd target as a back-up on the UFA market. Hedberg please.

My mistake, I didn't see Hossa. Still, I don't want him and even if we can afford him now, we need to think that our good young players will soon ask for the big bucks.

I talked in my other post about the possibility of signing Brunnstrom or Jagr. I would like to add the possibility of trading for Cammaleri. The Kings are apparently high on O'Byrne so I would put him in a package with Grabovski and a pick. That said, with O'Byrne gone, we would need another D. If he comes to a reasonable price, I wouldn't mind to get Hainsey back. It would leave us with the choice between Stillman and Brunette since with Cammy and Hainsey, Rolston could be too expansive.

Another lineup possibility (for me):

Higgins-Cammaleri-Kovalev
SKostitsyn-Plekanec-AKostitsyn
Stillman/Brunette-Koivu-Latendresse
Bégin/Chipchura/Lapierre/Kostopoulos
*D'Agostini

Markov-Komisarek
Hamrlik-Hainsey
Bouillon-Gorges
*Brisebois or UFA

Maybe Gainey was the one who sent Markov, maybe there is a Russian Defenceman we want to sign....

Well lets hope Markov takes Korneyev out for some nights on the town.....

Roofie him and then get him to sign a contract for montreal.

I hope next year, Higgins will become a third liner. That means we have a real wing scorer and Higgins will be where he should be.

Id love to see Koivu with the Kostitsyns.

Let's assume Ryder, Brisebois, Smolinski, Grabovski & Dandenault are gone.

Let's assume Mark Streit and all of the rest of the RFAs are re-signed.

Let's assume we don't acquire any new UFAs.

Let's assume the Habs invest in Andrei Kostitsyn as the eventual replacement for Alexei Kovalev as the "most talented" guy.

Let's assume Guillaume Latendresse improves his skating 5-10%.

Let's assume the new guys making the team are Kyle Chipchura, Pavel Valentenko, Max Pacioretti and Greg Stewart. Since we ended this year with 24, one over the limit, we'll start 08-09 with 23 players.

Let's assume Carbonneau wants a 3rd line with a bit of scoring punch as well as defensive awareness.

Given the above, I think the Habs would want to split up AKost and Kovalev, and put Chipchura with speedy two-way wingers (much like Doug Jarvis had Bob Gainey by his side).

Plekanec-Kovalev-Latendresse
Koivu-AKost-Pacioretti
Chipchura-SKost-Higgins
Lapierre-Streit-Begin
...Stewart, Kostopoulos

Komisarek-Markov
O'Byrne-Hamrlik
Gorges-Bouillon
...Valentenko

Price
Halak

This lineup has lots of spare cap space in it. Therefore, there is room for one or two UFAs to come in and upgrade the team further, hopefully some right-hand shots.

I know I'm dreaming but it would be sick if Brunnstrom chooses the Habs this week and that on July 1st, Gainey makes a big splash and sign Sundin for two years.

Brunnstrom-Sundin-Kovalev

Two great teachers for the young Fabian!

-rolston would be a poor alternative to hossa, but would be better than a kick in the teeth

-peca would be a nice upgrade from smolinski

-weirdly enough, i would welcome jarkko ruuttu
