Scouting the Flyers

Hey guys, Pens fan here. Obviously I know the Flyers roster and style of play well, but I didn't get to watch much of your series with the Flyers so I wanted to ask what you thought were the reasons that Philly was able to win it.

I know that Price under-performed but what were the other factors that lead to the series going the way that it went?

And what matchup(s) do you think were the most in the Flyers favor in your series?

Thanks guys!

Biron over-performed....

Just a good depth lineup up front while the Timonen-Coburn was pretty impressive. And check that Umberger guy.....he has it going on.....

Good luck, I'm definately on your bandwagon...

Go Avery on Biron's ass and you'll be fine.

Biron stood on his head. We outplayed them practically every game. Price wasn't at his best. Umberger(sp) scored 8 goals in 5 games. I predict Pens in 4 or 5.

they will bully your goalie and crash the net...especially with Knuble back...

your d-squad better be sharp in picking up rebounds that fleury will give and he will give rebounds....

your offensive will score a lot of goals if you are shooting a lot and be ready to crash the net and pick up biron's juicy rebounds...

crash the net goals will win this series

They have no breakout from D to Forward. Probably the worst in the league. They take bad penalties and force you to the outside alot when you're cycling. They're good at keeping you away from the front of the net because they're all big.

They generate very little in transition because, again, they have no breakout. And they score at least one fluke goal a game.

Pittsburgh should sweep them.

Create traffic, play hard. Most of our forwards played the perimeter game. Get your noses dirty. Biron didn't play that well (although he was solid), he gives up some nice rebounds....you gotta be there.

I really doubt Umberger will be able to put up the same numbers against the Penguins, I'd be surprised if he can get half the points he had in the series against Montreal.

The Flyers seemed to install a deflector beam around their net as Montreal was unable to put the puck into wide open parts of the net. Disable the device and you should be fine.

Seriously though, the Flyers played a tight game which gave the Habs very little chances to capitalize. When they did get those chances, either Biron stood on his head or the Habs miss an open net. The next shift a weak shot on Price would take a weird bounce and go in. It was a series of inches and Philly got a lot of the bounces. Hopefully that young kid of yours has a aim!

We know all about him. He plays his best against us so I'm hoping he got all of his goals out of his system before he got to us!

The Pens have controlled the first two rounds with puck possession, so if the Flyers D is still unable to move the puck we should be able to generate scoring chances and power plays.

I know that you guys badly outshot them but how many PP's did you have?

Our guys aren't afraid of getting dirty for the most part, but we struggled on scoring on rebounds against Lundqvist for some reason.

I would not worry at all, your team will destroy the Flyers.

I have a question were you a fan when the Pens were going through rebuilding? Just a question I like those fans, you have a good team, you will win.

We should have won, we had the better team but did not play like it.

- Balanced attack with 3 good lines who can score at anytime.
- Timonen + Coburn is their best defensive duo.
- Red hot goalie in Biron
- Mike Richards (IMHO, one of the best 2 way player in the NHL)

How did you like Flyers in the last game?

Yup, I'm 29 (will be 30 on june 4th, yikes!) and have been a Pens fan since right before the 1st cup in 1992 when I started watching sports with my dad (the Pirates were even good then!). I'm one of the few thousands here in Pittsburgh that actually paid to watch guys like Rico Fata and Konstantin Koltsov 6 years ago haha.

I've been a season ticket holder since right before the lockout and the people that I work with that used to ask me why I'd waste my money on the Pens are now begging me to take them to playoff games! Those types 'fans' give Pens fans a bad name on these boards I think.

I think the Flyers played their best game in game 5, they deserved that one.

They played a pretty good game 1 too, but I agree, game 5 was their best, they showed a lot of character.

I might sound completely homerist at first but here ya go:

-Breaks & opportunism.
-We had too many perimeter players, thus their slot was almost always clear.
-Very good special Units.
-Umberger.
-Biron was a factor, but let's just say we made him look good on a couple of shots by shooting either in his mitt directly or right on him.

That's about it. The Pens should win this serie easily the way they've been playing.

Considering we had about 20 scoring chances per game (Not far from the truth), Malkin, Sykora, Crosby, Hossa, Staal and Malone probably won't screw up as many as we did.
