Jason Smith (merged)

I posted this in a couple of different threads but I feel it would be a good idea. We should sign Smith to a 1-2 year deal for 1.5 mil per year. He would be a great leader for our young defense, he is a physical player that we really need, it would be a good signing under the cap and he is a great leader and he could replace Shanny with the A. What do you guys think?

Thanks,

CDrury23

1.5 mill is almost rookie territory. Why could we get a guy who is/was a captain for that little? crazy.

Jason Smith is the ONLY free agent I want to see signed to this team.

He deserves, and will earn, more than $1.5 million, though

Smith made 2 million this season. He's not gonna take a paycut.

He played on the Flyers for one year
But to the above poster, your right he will get more than 1.5, more like 2-2.5, I just really hope the Rangers sign him, Ryder and make a trade for Pitkanen

I don't think he'd sign for that little, maybe in the 2.5-3 mil range.

Why wouldn't the Flyers match an offer that low? Why would he leave a team he's captain of for less money? I'd like the guy, too, but going from the Flyers to the Rangers is like hockey treason. We'd have a more realistic shot at Commodore, IMO.

And Gomez from the Devils to the Rangers is hockey treason also, but that happened. Also, they have a lot of young leaders on that team and young defenseman. I dunno, It's just a gut feeling he will sign withe the Rangers

No kidding it happened. Once. You think this is going to be a yearly event where prominant players from our arch rivals bend over backwards to join our team? Gomez coming here was about two things: #1 A boatload of money, and #2 the real reason, Sticking it to Lamoriello. Gomez signing with NY is the hockey equivalent of the girl next door cheerleader bringing home a guy with a mohawk and a nose ring just because she knows it's going to piss daddy off. I don't really think it's going to become a regular thing.

If Smith is willing to sign for that little, it means he's either coming back home to Edmonton, or staying in Philly.

Personally, I'd be shocked to see him get anything less than $12,000,000 over 4 years. He'll be highly sought after this Summer, and there aren't many more people in hockey that deserve a payday more than Jason Smith.

LOL, no chance. Jason Smith is nearly done. For all the abuse Derian Hatcher takes on this site, he is the superior defenseman and he's overpaid at $3.5 million. There's a good reason why Jason Smith has only averaged 16 minutes of ice time in the playoffs.

He offers so much more than that it's not even funny.

The fact that he was named the Flyers captain as soon as he showed up should speak volumes about this guy.

I'd welcome him back to Edmonton at any price.

I would love to see Smith sign with the Rangers. I say 3.5 for one year. He would add much needed leadership, and grit to a young ranger defense. Plus, he would help keep bodies away from the front of the net, the type of player the rangers have needed since Beukeboom left. He would be a great compliment for Staal on the top pair.

Could he be playing 16 minutes per game because Stevens has a firm grasp on how to use Gator properly?

He's a ****ing warrior among men, and he'll have no trouble finding a team and a decent pay day come July.

Anything more than 2 years $4 million is an overpayment ... and as flyers fan I wouldn't go that high.

I hope they let him walk.

I don't love Smith's game. But I do think the team needs some leadership on the blueline.
