Oh jesus christ. Just made re-signing Jason Pominville next year that much more fun for Buffalo.

Erat is a great player though, would love him on my team.

As a fan of another team, I don't really think it is too much given the length and the number of years it eats up of UFA time.

It's more of a realization of the market that is set that would upset people (myself included).

I think this is just a reality of the cap world. Teams will try to lock good young players long term at a higher rate than in the past. It makes all sorts of sense to somewhat overpay the 25 year old player with a strong possibility that he will outplay his contract in the not so distant future. The alternative is to overpay a 32-33 year old UFA (Ryan Smyth, Nylander, Jovanovski et all) with a strong possibility that they will never live up to the expectations and a couple years down the road you will be stuck with an albatross of a contract and a marginal NHL player.

Okay so they can blow $32 million on a scrub like Erat but could not afford to keep a single piece of their core from last year?

How the hell did he snag more than Dumont?

Am I the only one who really dislikes all these 7, 8, 9 year+ contracts being handed out? Is it really good for the league to have every team look basically identical for years on end? Is that exciting?

And what happens if a guy like Ovechkin or Richards goes down with a career hampering concussion or knee injury? What does their franchise do then? Think about how dumb they were for signing any player to a decade+ deal?

I'm afraid something like that needs to happen to make an example of all these ostentatious contracts and why they're not exactly smart.

Then the player is injured, is put on LTIR and the team has the cap space. It's not really that big of a deal, I think the team would be more worried that a player doesn't live up to the amount they are being paid.

Well. It's not like any team has more than a couple contracts of such duration.

The reason there was more movement in the pre-cap days is because poor teams (Oilers, Flames, Chicago, Pittsburgh) simply could not afford to keep their stars while Rangers, Detroit, Dallas and Colorado added a star player every year.

I think it's a very good deal, I hope the Sens can sign Vermette to something similar.

so you wouldn't want the Kings to sign Anze Kopitar to a 10+ year contract ? ... not saying that I agree with this deal at all

Well, frankly, I'm surprised at the length, not necessarily the amount (given the amount of years he is signed for). His cap hit will equate to 4.5 million a year. Lets hope that with a return to semi-decent linemates this year, he will look more like the Erat at the beginning of the season, rather than the one who finished the season.

I'm glad to keep a part of the core here in Nashville. I just hope this contract doesn't cost us elsewhere on the roster.

I should add that while I had him pegged at 3-3.5 million (others had him around 3.5 to 4), I was expecting a 3-4 year deal. At 7 years, you can see why the extra .5 - 1 million was thrown in, especially given I hear no mention of a NMC. If Erat had consistent linemates this season (not Peverly and Fiddler either), he would have probably hit 65 - 70 points quite easily. With a line of Erat - Legwand - Radulov possible for years to come, I do not see any reason why he will not consistently be a 60+ point scorer.

Its surprising. This is one of those signings that either blows up in your face, or it makes you look good as a GM (in the long run). Right now...I'm just trying to stay positive () and believe that the Erat of the beginning of the season returns with a vengence next year.
