To me, seems like it would have been a good job for Trevor Linden (who not only has the prerequisites of Mellanby (long-time player, leadership track record), but also has intimate knowledge on the Canucks dressing room (which I think would have been additionally attractive)... But who knows if Linden was approached with the opportunity, or even wanted the job...

Good on Mellanby, though... Definitely don't hate the decision to bring him in ...

Gillis said with a lot of veterans, when they retire they like to take a break from hockey, period, before coming back in a coaching/manageme)nt role. (Case in point - Mellany himself. Also Ray Bourque and Cam Neely.

If Linden joins this team's front office, it will probably be in a year or two.

I agree, but there was an article in the Sun where he said he hasn't been approached yet. Eventually I am sure Linden will join the organization in a suit but it might be not a bad idea to just take a step back and look from the outside for a year or two.

Love Mellanby, but isn't that Tamby's job almost?

I loved Mellanby as a player and I'm happy to have him in the organization but I don't know anything about his management/talent evaluation capabilities. Could be similar to Smyl or could be better.

Anyone familiar with current players Mellanby has spoken highly of? It's certainly within the realm of reason that with his input, we'll be seeing one of them in Vancouver.

Gotta wonder if Tamby is on his way out. If not, his role could be significantly diminished.

Memo to Gillis:

We need an organizational chart here, pronto!

I do loves me some Trev, and I kind of agree with you. But, I think we need some fresh perspective.

Seems to have a little of his responsbilities. But Aquaman seems to be filling his front office with more than a GM (Gillis) and a Director of Player personell(Tambs).....

The aquistion of Gilman and Mellanby makes the front office stronger. And I'm all for that because Nonis/Tambs obviously didnt run the team Aquaman wanted. Either way, its like adding another third line checking center. Cant go wrong with that!

There's a different between consultant and assistant. Mellanby is just here to give Gillis advice; Tambellini has actual managerial responsibilities.

Ya, I agree... Tambellini probably already fills the old-smelling quota... Bring in a guy who challenges and provides fresh perspective to the discussions... So, now, I guess it's 3 fresh perspectives (Gillis, Gillman, Mellanby) to maybe 2 old perspectives (Tambellini, AV - who I think will be re-hired)... Would be a pretty good mix between new and old...

That seems to happen often around here. Is there a problem with fresh food in the GVA?

Awesome, I really liked Mellanby on CBC and he's a hockey warrior and seems to be extremely knowledgeable about the game and it's players.

Also, a side note Mellanby is probably the most bad ass guy I've ever seen in a interview. I remember him talking with PJ Stock about some stick incident that happened this past season and Stock is doing his usual energetic schpell about how it's wrong and improper and Mellanby just stares Stock down and says in a quiet tone "Sometimes you do what you got to do." Mellanby seriously comes off like Steven Seagal to me.

Welcome to the Canucks Scott

good strategic move. hire an ex nhl player, who has 1400 games of nhl expierence. he knows what and how players think, and probably have good advice on what type of players we should bring in, how they feel, their hunger to win, etc etc.

his decisions or advice will be based on

"in my expierence as a player i think this and that about this player etc etc. if i was a player this is how i would like it, etc etc and thats why i think u should bring him in"

type of advice.
