For what it's worth, The Province speculates that Mellanby's hiring may impact Lorne Henning's job, not Tambellini's.

http://www.canada.com/theprovince/ne...5-5b92c902fb14

By the sounds of the conference call though, Mellanby made it seem that he would be a consultant for all player personnel decisions, which probably means from both the professional and amateur ranks.

Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci (Who barely played for them), Roenick, signed Georges Laraque and gave him a NTC....and so on.

I can't beleive this is happening. This would be as dumb as or dumber than ownership firing Nonis.

To quote Jane's Addiction 'Idiots Rule'....indeed.
Sorry, guess I misinterpreted. I don't care what you think about Gillis quite frankly, but you've obviously got a predisposition towards the guy.

Actually, you do care otherwise you wouldn't have looked up those quotes.

I'm a cynical SOB when it comes to stuff like the Canucks making illogical front office decisions. I thought you of all people would have figured that out by now.

Congrats guys, I think that Gilles has an plan that he wants to execute. Since, he's coming in from outside of the league, it's only smart to surround himself with personnel that is familiar with the NHL. In Mellanby, he get's such a person and also somebody who isn't too far removed from actually playing in the league. Somebody, who has a sense on what's on the players mind.

Sidenote: Mellanby can give Gilles his impressions on ex-Thrasher teammate Marian Hossa. *wink*

GL guys with the new regime in Vancouver. Too bad that one of my favorite teams management and ownership is inapt of making such smart decision. (Thrashers, Mellanby connection.)

No, again, I don't care. You stated something that I disagreed with, and I posted something that I felt was to the contrary. Doesn't matter if it was Gillis, or your opinion on which Spice Girl was the ugliest.

No, you made a post deciding what my opinions were on Gillis which you were 100% wrong about and without soliciting my opinion directly.

Oh, the answer is 'Posh and Scary Spice are tEh fUgLy.'

I'm sorry, I still don't get where I totally misread your opinion on Gillis. Is it not fair to say that you've been, for the most part, negative about his hiring? 'Hate' wasn't the correct word, but I definitely wouldn't put you in "Support Gillis" camp...am I 100% wrong about that?

And the correct answer was Sporty Spice. Sporty.

I don't have an opinion either way. I don't like the way Ownership has handled the whole situation.

Fine, but I don't think you can fault me for coming to the conclusion that you stating Gillis was a "horrible choice" meant that you weren't in favour of him as GM.

That's an opinion, and a strong one at that. If Gillis does end up doing good work here you're going to look pretty silly, not that that's anything new. Don't try to weasel out of it now.

No, I was saying ownership would be making a horrible choice if they hired him.

What happens to Stan Smyl? Doesn't he have (had) a similar position within the organization?

That's the question everyone is waiting for Gillis to decide upon/answer.

How can you believe hiring him is a horrible choice if you have no opinion about him? That makes zero sense.

More from Dolemite about Mike Gillis (about whom he has "no opinion"):

Great. Naslund's going to get another $6 million contract with a NTC, dogs and cats will be mating in the street and NW division will make us their *****es for years to come.
You have been one of the most consistently negative people about Gillis -- that you are now trying to weasel out of it and pretend you don't have a strong opinion about him is pathetic.

I like this move. I really liked the way Mellanby played the game - lots of grit and intensity. The entire franchise, from front office down to the players, could use more passionate, competitive people. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

don't care too much about this move, but I think we could use him on our first line.

That's interesting. Nonis in his last press conference gave a huge vote of confidence to Lorne Henning saying he's an "outstanding individual and a great scout." He also stated part of the reason he has Henning is because he has experience with winning organizations (won 2 Cups as a player and 2 as a coach I think) Mellanby replacing him would not have such winning experience, and actually has a reputation for NOT winning if I'm not mistaken.

Not really jumping to conclusions here, just saying is all.

A bit off topic, but why do I have the feeling that we're going to go overboard with size and somehow acquire Derian Hatcher along with whatever flyer forward we want?

Well, Henning has been involved in the team's pro scouting since 2005 and they really haven't had a great track record since that time (outside of Bulis, Carter, and Pyatt).

To be honest, I would be ok with that if Bieksa was part of the package going the other way. Hatcher only has one more year left and would add some size and toughness to the blueline.

That said, Gillis seems interested in adding more skill to the blueline, not less.
